Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kwak (bowl), also reflected in Vietnamese cốc (glass, tumbler) (the latter borrowed from a Sino-Tibetan language).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “STEDT apparently has a Chinese comparandum for this term, listed as "S583", but no character is given. Is this a clerical error, and is there a potential Chinese cognate?”
