Etymology

A few possible derivations, with all forms descending from Proto-Turkic *čap- (“to hit, to beat, to attack”):

• چاپمق (çapmak) +‎ ـا (-a)
• چاپمق (çapmak) +‎ ـان (-an)
• Proto-Turkic *čap- +‎ *-ga

Cognate with Chuvash ҫава (śava, “scythe”), Karaim čapa (“currycomb”), Tatar çapqı (“hoe, hatchet”), Kyrgyz чапкы (capkı, “hoe, scythe”), Kazakh шапқы (şapqy, “chisel”), Uzbek chopqi (“cleaver, hoe”), Turkmen çapgı (“hoe”) and Khakas шапхы (şapxı, “scythe”).
