From Proto-Semitic *zarʕ- (seed). Cognate with Akkadian 𒆰 (zērum, seed), Arabic زَرَعَ (zaraʕa, to sow), زَرْع (zarʕ, seed), and Aramaic זְרַע (zəraʿ, to sow), זַרְעָא (zarʿā, seed).
