From Ottoman Turkish اودنج (ödünc, that is to be paid at some future time, a loan)[1] (alternatively اوتونج (ötünc)), from Ottoman Turkish اوتنمك (ötünmek, to say, to request, to make a wish, to beg),[2] from Proto-Turkic *öt- (to pass through, to make oneself heard, to take a loan, to be indebted),[3][4] morphologically öt- +‎ -ün +‎ . Cognates with Azerbaijani ödünc, Kumyk оьтуьнч (ötünç), Turkmen ötünç (apology).
