Aschaffenburg is a city of 71,000 people (2019) in Lower Franconia. It is the largest city in the Bavarian Lower Main region. Because of its location, it is often referred to as the gateway to the Spessart.

The “gate to the Spessart”, or the “bridge to the Rhenish culture”, is the centre of the Bavarian Untermain region.
Aschaffenburg has a lot to offer culturally, including the city theatre, the Hofgarten cabaret, and the Jesuit Church art gallery.

- 1 Schloss Johannisburg, Schloßpl. 4. Renaissance palace built around 1614 for the Prince Bishop of Mainz in impressive coloured red sandstone. It was almost totally destroyed at the end of World War II but was restored a number of years later.
