Wikipedia:WikiProject Isle of Wight/Assessment
Welcome to the assessment department of the WikiProject Wight! This department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Isle of Wight-related articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject Wight}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Isle of Wight-related articles by quality and Category:Isle of Wight-related articles by importance , which serves as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist.
FAQ
[edit]- See also the general assessment FAQ.
- What is the purpose of the article ratings?: The rating system allows the project to monitor the quality of articles in our subject areas, and to prioritize work on these articles. It is also utilized by the Wikipedia 1.0 program to prepare for static releases of Wikipedia content. Please note, however, that these ratings are primarily intended for the internal use of the project, and do not necessarily imply any official standing within Wikipedia as a whole.
- How do I add an article to the WikiProject? : Just add {{WikiProject Wight}} to the talk page; there's no need to do anything else.
- Someone put a {{WikiProject Wight}} template on an article, but it doesn't seem to be within the project's scope. What should I do? : Because of the large number of articles we deal with, we occasionally make mistakes and add tags to articles that shouldn't have them. If you notice one, feel free to remove the tag, and optionally leave a note on the talk page of this department (or directly with the person who tagged the article).
- Who can assess articles? : Any member of the Isle of Wight WikiProject is free to add—or change—the rating of an article. Editors who are not participants in this project are also welcome to assess articles, but should defer to consensus within the project in case of procedural disputes.
- How do I rate an article? : Check the quality scale and select the level that best matches the state of the article; then, follow the instructions below to add the rating to the project banner on the article's talk page. Please note that some of the available levels have an associated formal review process; this is documented in the assessment scale.
- Can I request that someone else rate an article? : Of course; to do so, please list it in the assessment requests section.
- Why didn't the reviewer leave any comments? : Unfortunately, due to the volume of articles that need to be assessed, we are unable to leave detailed comments in most cases. If you have particular questions, you might ask the person who assessed the article; they will usually be happy to provide you with their reasoning.
- What if I don't agree with a rating? : You can list it in the section for assessment requests below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again. Please note that some of the available levels have an associated formal review process; this is documented in the assessment scale.
- Aren't the ratings subjective? : Yes, they are somewhat subjective, but it's the best system we've been able to devise. If you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!
- What if I have a question not listed here? : If your question concerns the article assessment process specifically, please refer to the discussion page for this department; for any other issues, you can go to the main project discussion page directly.
Usage
[edit]Summary
[edit]The {{WikiProject Wight}} project banner template should be added to the talk page of every article within the scope of the project. There are optional parameters for the class and importance, to indicate that the article is unreferenced or needs a photo, and to nest the banner in a group with other WikiProject banners present on the page. These can be left blank, but it is recommended to include a 'class' and 'importance' rating if at all possible. Any comments you may have on the assessment should be left on the same talk page.
Detail
[edit]Usage
[edit]The {{WikiProject Isle of Wight}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of every article within the scope of the project. An abbreviation is available, {{WPWight}}. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. The full syntax is as follows:
{{WikiProject Isle of Wight |class= |importance= |unref= |needs-photo= |attention= |discussion= }}
This code would have the same effect as typing {{WikiProject Isle of Wight}}, but is to be preferred as it gives a framework for future editors to easily add detail. It is possible to omit the 'unref', 'needs-photo' and 'attention' fields when adding the code to an article which (as appropriate) is properly referenced, already has a photo or is not in need of urgent attention.
However, it is preferred to include all fields, even if some are initially blank. If there is a danger of the content of a talk page disappearing below the code for headers, consider the horizontal alignment instead:
{{WikiProject Isle of Wight|class=|importance=|unref=|needs-photo=|attention=|discussion=}}
A fully completed template would be produced with this code:
{{WikiProject Isle of Wight |class=C |importance=Low |unref=yes |needs-photo=yes |attention=yes |discussion=yes }}
Optional parameters
[edit]- attention – set
|attention=yes
if the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.- This parameter populates Category:United Kingdom articles needing attention.
- class – valid values are listed in the custom class mask. See the project's quality scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave
|class=
blank or omit the parameter. - discussion – set
|discussion=yes
if there is an important discussion in progress on the talk page, e.g. renaming, moving, merging etc.- discussion subject – use this parameter to specify the topic of discussion. If blank or omitted, it is as if
|discussion subject=the article's future.
had been specified.
- discussion subject – use this parameter to specify the topic of discussion. If blank or omitted, it is as if
- importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project's importance scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave
|importance=
blank or omit the parameter. - listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Marius Goring, use
|listas=Goring, Marius
so that the talk page will show up in the G's and not the M's of the various assessment and administrative categories). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter. For more information about this, please see Wikipedia:Categorization of people § Ordering names in a category.
If the article is using {{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add|listas=
to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required. - needs-photo – set
|needs-photo=yes
to request that a picture or pictures be included in this article to improve its quality.- This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in the Isle of Wight.
- unref – set
|unref=yes
if the article lacks sufficient references and/or adequate inline citations- This parameter populates Category:Unreferenced Isle of Wight-related articles.
- category – set
|category=no
if, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
If you assess an article's class, it is helpful if comments are left to explain the assessment, especially for lengthy articles which some editors might argue deserve a higher (or lower) rating. A prompt and link are provided for this purpose.

[edit]Quality assessments
[edit]An article's quality assessment is generated from the class parameter in the {{WikiProject Banner Shell}}. Articles that have the {{WikiProject Wight}} project banner on their talk page will be added to the appropriate categories by quality.
The following values may be used for the class parameter to describe the quality of the article (see Wikipedia:Content assessment for assessment criteria):
FA (for featured articles only; adds articles to Category:FA-Class Isle of Wight-related articles) | FA | |

Quality scale
[edit]Class | Criteria | Reader's experience | Editing suggestions | Example |
---|---|---|---|---|
FA | The article has attained featured article status by passing an in-depth examination by impartial reviewers from WP:Featured article candidates. More detailed criteria
The article meets the featured article criteria:
A featured article exemplifies Wikipedia's very best work and is distinguished by professional standards of writing, presentation, and sourcing. In addition to meeting the policies regarding content for all Wikipedia articles, it has the following attributes.
|
Professional, outstanding, and thorough; a definitive source for encyclopedic information. | No further content additions should be necessary unless new information becomes available; further improvements to the prose quality are often possible. | Cleopatra (as of June 2018) |
FL | The article has attained featured list status by passing an in-depth examination by impartial reviewers from WP:Featured list candidates. More detailed criteria
The article meets the featured list criteria:
|
Professional standard; it comprehensively covers the defined scope, usually providing a complete set of items, and has annotations that provide useful and appropriate information about those items. | No further content additions should be necessary unless new information becomes available; further improvements to the prose quality are often possible. | List of dates predicted for apocalyptic events (as of May 2018) |
A | The article is well organized and essentially complete, having been examined by impartial reviewers from a WikiProject or elsewhere. Good article status is not a requirement for A-Class. More detailed criteria
The article meets the A-Class criteria:
Provides a well-written, clear and complete description of the topic, as described in Wikipedia:Article development. It should be of a length suitable for the subject, appropriately structured, and be well referenced by a broad array of reliable sources. It should be well illustrated, with no copyright problems. Only minor style issues and other details need to be addressed before submission as a featured article candidate. See the A-Class assessment departments of some of the larger WikiProjects (e.g. WikiProject Military history). |
Very useful to readers. A fairly complete treatment of the subject. A non-expert in the subject would typically find nothing wanting. | Expert knowledge may be needed to tweak the article, and style problems may need solving. WP:Peer review may help. | Battle of Nam River (as of June 2014) |
GA | The article meets all of the good article criteria, and has been examined by one or more impartial reviewers from WP:Good article nominations. More detailed criteria
A good article is:
|
Useful to nearly all readers, with no obvious problems; approaching (though not necessarily equalling) the quality of a professional publication. | Some editing by subject and style experts is helpful; comparison with an existing featured article on a similar topic may highlight areas where content is weak or missing. | Discovery of the neutron (as of April 2019) |
B | The article meets all of the B-Class criteria. It is mostly complete and does not have major problems, but requires some further work to reach good article standards. More detailed criteria
|
Readers are not left wanting, although the content may not be complete enough to satisfy a serious student or researcher. | A few aspects of content and style need to be addressed. Expert knowledge may be needed. The inclusion of supporting materials should be considered if practical, and the article checked for general compliance with the Manual of Style and related style guidelines. | Psychology (as of January 2024) |
C | The article is substantial but is still missing important content or contains irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup. More detailed criteria
The article cites more than one reliable source and is better developed in style, structure, and quality than Start-Class, but it fails one or more of the criteria for B-Class. It may have some gaps or missing elements, or need editing for clarity, balance, or flow.
|
Useful to a casual reader, but would not provide a complete picture for even a moderately detailed study. | Considerable editing is needed to close gaps in content and solve cleanup problems. | Wing (as of June 2018) |
Start | An article that is developing but still quite incomplete. It may or may not cite adequate reliable sources. More detailed criteria
The article has a meaningful amount of good content, but it is still weak in many areas. The article has one or more of the following:
|
Provides some meaningful content, but most readers will need more. | Providing references to reliable sources should come first; the article also needs substantial improvement in content and organisation. Also improve the grammar, spelling, writing style and improve the jargon use. | Ball (as of September 2014) |
Stub | A very basic description of the topic. Meets none of the Start-Class criteria. | Provides very little meaningful content; may be little more than a dictionary definition. Readers probably see insufficiently developed features of the topic and may not see how the features of the topic are significant. | Any editing or additional material can be helpful. The provision of meaningful content should be a priority. The best solution for a Stub-class Article to step up to a Start-class Article is to add in referenced reasons of why the topic is significant. | Lineage (anthropology) (as of December 2014) |
List | Meets the criteria of a stand-alone list or set index article, which is an article that contains primarily a list, usually consisting of links to articles in a particular subject area. | There is no set format for a list, but its organization should be logical and useful to the reader. | Lists should be lists of live links to Wikipedia articles, appropriately named and organized. | List of literary movements |
Importance assessment
[edit]An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{WP:Wight}} project banner on its talk page:
- {{WikiProject Wight| ... | importance=??? | ...}}
Top |
High |
Mid |
Low |
The following values may be used for importance assessments:
- Top - The article is about one of the core topics of the Isle of Wight. Adds articles to Category:Top-importance Isle of Wight-related articles
- High - The article is about the infrastructure or the most well-known or culturally or historically significant aspects of the Isle of Wight. Adds articles to Category:High-importance Isle of Wight-related articles
- Mid - The article is about a topic within the Isle of Wight that may or may not be commonly known outside the Isle of Wight. Adds articles to Category:Mid-importance Isle of Wight-related articles
- Low - The article is about a topic that is highly specialized within the Isle of Wight and is not generally common knowledge outside the Isle of Wight. Adds articles to Category:Low-importance Isle of Wight-related articles
All articles that lack an importance rating are categorized in Category:Unknown-importance Isle of Wight-related articles.
Importance scale
[edit]Label | Criteria | Reader's experience | Editor's experience | Example |
---|---|---|---|---|
Top | The article is one of the core topics of the Isle of Wight. | A reader who is not involved in the Isle of Wight will have high familiarity with the subject matter and should be able to relate to the topic easily. | Articles in this importance range are written in mostly generic terms, leaving technical terms and descriptions for more specialized pages. | Isle of Wight |
High | The article covers a topic that is vital to understanding the history or technology, etc of the Isle of Wight. | Most readers will at least be familiar with the topic being discussed. | These articles describe the basics beyond the core topics about the island and the more significant historical events in the island's history. Articles about the most basic topics on the island like large towns and the most historically and culturally significant topics are included in this level. Some technical terms can be used within articles in this range, but where they are used, they should be explained or at least link to articles that discuss the terms in more detail. | Newport |
Mid | The article covers a topic that has a strong but not vital role in the history or technology of the Isle of Wight. | Many readers will be familiar with the topic being discussed, but a larger majority of readers may have only cursory knowledge of the overall subject. | Articles at this level will cover subjects that are well known but not necessarily vital to understand the island. Due to the topics covered at this level, Mid-importance articles will generally have more technical terms used in the article text. | Brading |
Low | The article is not required knowledge for a broad understanding of the Isle of Wight. | Few readers outside the local area of the article's topic may be familiar with the subject matter. It is likely that the reader does not know anything at all about the subject before reading the article. | Articles at this range of importance will often delve into the minutiae of the island, using technical terms (and defining them) as needed. Topics included at this level include small villages, and local railway stations that otherwise have no significant impact on the rest of the Isle of Wight. | Lake railway station |
