WikiProject Hip hop
[edit]

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to coordinate and better organize information in articles related to hip hop culture and music. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there. WikiProject Hip hop will attempt to standardize and improve all articles related to the culture of hip hop on Wikipedia, as well as create missing articles. We will do this through volunteer contributors and editors. A large emphasis is made on citing reliable sources. If you would like to make a contribution and are interested in joining the WikiProject, please feel free to add your name to the Members list and find yourself an article to adopt. If you're not sure where to begin or if you have doubts or ideas on how to improve an article, please address the project's discussion forum.

For more information on WikiProjects, please see WikiPedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices.

Goals
[edit]
The project aims primarily to:
  1. Write and expand articles related to hip hop culture and/or hip hop music.
  2. Organize and manage that content — A mass of information is of no use if it isn't properly organized. Also, make sure that any activity on any hip hop-related article is being relayed back to the project. If there is a dispute on a related talk page, not everyone is going to see it. Recommend that the dispute be brought to the project, that way you can get the opinions of all of the project's participants.
  3. Damage control — See something that needs to be done? Be bold! Edit articles, get involved in the discussions on the articles talk page, and feel free to tell us your thoughts and ideas on the WikiProject talk page!
  4. Featured articles and Good articles — Though we do have our fair share of good/featured content at the moment there's still a ton of work to be done and articles to be elevated in stature. We need to work on cleaning up a lot of our pages and getting them in decent enough shape to be nominated.
Tasks
[edit]
Please refer to the to-do list for specific tasks and/or the talk page for discussions regarding major projects.
  1. Reduce trivial information, speculation, point of view, and anything else that violates Wikipedia's Fictional Guidelines.
  2. Monitoring all articles for violations of anything listed above (trivial information, speculation, etc.)
  3. Promote the Hip hop article to Good or Featured Article status.
  4. Add the project template {{WikiProject Hip hop}} to all hip hop related articles' talk pages.
  5. Assess all hip hop related articles for class and importance.
  6. Expand and improve all related articles.
  7. Help find references for artist/group articles that currently have none. See -->Wikipedia:WikiProject Hip hop/Unreferenced BLPs
  8. Work toward making all hip hop related articles and lists clean, organized, well-written, and accessible.

Tips

[edit]
? Use common sense. Ultimately, assume good faith on the part of others, be bold in editing because perfection is not required.
See Wikipedia:Editing policy for more information.

Before starting a new article! - Notability is a concern that must be adhered to. See Wikipedia:Notability (music) for more information.
Need help starting a new article? See Wikipedia:Article wizard it will help you through the process of submitting a new article to Wikipedia.

I. Use references. This is an encyclopedia, so remember to include a ==References== section listing websites, newspapers, articles, books and other sources you used to write the article. New articles and statements added to existing articles may be deleted if unreferenced or referenced poorly. See Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:Cite_sources and Wikipedia:References for more information.
II. Use proper spelling and grammar. We want to learn editors to write proper". There is helpful guidelines in regards to styles. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (music) for more information.
III. Use footnotes. Take advantage of the footnote ability Wikipedia has, instead of including html links inside the context include them as footnotes. See Wikipedia:Footnotes on how to use them.
IV. Write a good lead. Be sure to write a lead that concisely summarizes the entire article into one or two paragraphs, which make sense to someone who may know nothing about the subjects in question. See Wikipedia:Lead section for more information.
V. Stay on topic. Many articles are criticized for length; sticking to the subject matter helps eliminate this. See Wikipedia:The perfect article for more information.
VI. Keep it simple. Remember that the average reader should be able to comprehend the erudition. Although you should use a broad vocabulary of regular, non-technical terms, do not provide such a quantity of locutions as to impel those who aspire to derive serviceable information from the article to consult a dictionary.
VII. Use images if possible. Images enhance articles greatly, but only use them when they are necessary, and ensure that their copyright status has been specified and we are allowed to use it on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Images
