- Propose renaming Category:Gardening books to Category:Books about gardening
- Nominator's rationale: I suggest renaming to use 'about', per parent Category:Works about gardening. This variant is more clear. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:47, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: rename and purge, from 1806 to 1813 Germany was called Confederation of the Rhine but it did not include Austria and Prussia. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:36, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- If approved then redirect them all, to aid navigation. But I am not sure that precision is helpful for such short time spans. – Fayenatic London 21:39, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Redirecting is a good idea. We already have Category:Confederation of the Rhine so the proposal is consistent with that. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:54, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Large nomination; allowing extra time for objections.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:53, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Category:Confederation of the Rhine already contains all the nominated categories, so renaming will not change the parenting and, while technically correct, IMHO it would be unnecessary. – Fayenatic London 12:05, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Rename and purge with redirects per nom. It is a short timespan, but we should strive to be as accurate as possible. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 23:11, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Final relist to gather more participation and resolve concerns about precision being unnecessary.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, ThadeusOfNazereth(he/him)Talk to Me! 23:07, 19 November 2024 (UTC)- Support renaming, although we do also have categories like Category:1806 in Italy including events in all of modern-day Italy, even though the "Kingdom of Italy" was a much smaller construct by then. For Germany, we already have a separate "in Prussia" category, so it does make sense to restrict it to the Confederation of the Rhine, but I don't see it being a general rule either. Category:20th-century explorers from the Russian Empire
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:20th-century Russian explorers (with an expanded scope). HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 01:54, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Was opposed at speedy by
@Altenmann: by the creatora similarly named user, in spite of the fact that there is no other category in Category:20th-century Russian people by occupation that uses the Russian Empire naming convention SMasonGarrison 20:44, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose a valid subcategory of Category:Explorers from the Russian Empire <-- category:Explorers by former country. Not to say that "Russian explorers" is an ambiguous term, because in 20th century there were two thoroughly different Russian states: Russian Empire and Russia, wide apart in time. Not to say about RSFSR --Altenmann >talk 21:04, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Again, how does this address the fact that no other category in the Category:20th-century Russian people tree uses this convention? What makes the unambiguous Category:Russian explorers the exception? For the record, if this change stays, it's going to continue to not mesh with the rest of the Fooian occupation template headers. SMasonGarrison 02:26, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- This is because the templated/automated categorization is screwed up.
- There is a whole Category:19th-century people from the Russian Empire by occupation
- Therefore there must be Category:20th-century people from the Russian Empire by occupation
- And we have to add missing tree, not delete valid categories. on bureaucratric reasons. --Altenmann >talk 03:27, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Please wait until this CFD is settled. Your category creations are going to break the current version of the underlying template. Please be patient. There is a very long history of this category tree that only carved out two centuries for the Russian empire. Category:20th-century_people_from_the_Russian_Empire was merged and redirected into [1] Category:20th-century_Russian people_from_the_Russian_Empire by @Fayenatic london: and Category:20th-century Russian monarchs isn't Category:20th-century_Russian monarchs_from_the_Russian_Empire SMasonGarrison 04:05, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- So you are saying you created a faulty template and now trying to delete a category that does not fit it? How typical of software developer: "it is not a bug, it is a feature". --Altenmann >talk 18:04, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Please keep it civil. I've asked you to be patient, and even said that I'd modify the template if the category was kept. Insulting me, and saying that I shouldn't be editing in this area because of my profession is not in the spirit of wikipedia.SMasonGarrison 23:51, 8 November 2024 (UTC
- Because of your profession I was expecting you behave professionally, rather than revert warring on category you do not own. Good bye, do whatever you want, with cosmonauts placed in the category of Russian Empire. If you do not understand how idiotic it looks, I no longer wish to communicate with you. --Altenmann >talk 00:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

- If kept, heavily purge, these are mostly Soviet explorers. There is even an American explorer in this category, Carl von Hoffman. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:33, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Someone screwed up the contents of this category recently. Last time I looked it had only 8 entries. And now someone added Boris Andreyev (cosmonaut) into it (cosmonauts in the Russian Empire: alt-history sci-fi :-). --Altenmann >talk 18:04, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- "Someone" appears to be the nominator. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:26, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. I'm adding the relevant Russian pages per the concern raised at speedy about the contents. If the category is kept as currently named, I'd support purging. @Altenmann I think you need to review: WP:BATTLE, based on your comments on my talk page User talk:Smasongarrison#Please revert all some of your changes. - Rename as nominated. The category as named covers a very short period of time, from 1900 to 1917. Russian existed through the twentieth century because there was the RSFSR, and, during the Soviet period, Russian is a subcategory of Soviet . Robert McClenon (talk) 23:16, 8 November 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: Withdrawn. Starting a new discussion addressing the broader issue of a number of subcategories within Category:Ministers of the Victoria (state) state government (non-admin closure) GMH Melbourne (talk) 07:06, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Ministries are the same portfolio just a different name. GMH Melbourne (talk) 03:30, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- I believe these typically follow the format of Category:Ministers for creative industries of Victoria, based on a number of similarly named categories at Category:Government ministers by country and MOS:JOBTITLES. Hey man im josh (talk) 18:38, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- If that's the case I'll probably start another discussion for a bulk rename for a number of sub catergories of Category:Ministers of the Victoria (state) state government after this merge is complete. GMH Melbourne (talk) 02:32, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

- Propose renaming Category:Postmasters general of Australia to Category:Postmasters-General of Australia
- Nominator's rationale: Correct capitalisation per Postmaster-General's Department article. StAnselm (talk) 02:32, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Support: consistent with the corresponding article. GMH Melbourne (talk) 02:46, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Looking at the category's page history there seems to be a lot of going back and forth with the capitalision. GMH Melbourne (talk) 02:54, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Not back and forth, it was one-directional, the parent category has been moved too. The reasoning was, I think, that the article is about the office while the category is about people (I am not the best defender of this rename). I guess meanwhile most, if not all, similar categories are without capitalization as well, e.g. article Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Category:Prime ministers of the United Kingdom. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:24, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Procedural oppose, this requires a broader discussion, it doesn't make sense to only rename this particular category. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:32, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Why not? Category:Postmasters general includes offices from many countries, some of which use a hyphen, and some don't. (Of course, that category was moved twice speedily, without any discussion.) StAnselm (talk) 14:53, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's not about the hyphen but about the capitalization. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Well, the hyphen is important too. The rationale for moving the parent cat was "None of the 11 sub categories use a hyphen", but as far as I can tell that simply wasn't true - the hyphen for this category was removed three days later. Would you be OK with Category:Postmasters-general of Australia? StAnselm (talk) 18:00, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- That would be fine with me. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:03, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
