User:B-bot
This user account is a bot operated by B (talk). It is used to make repetitive automated or semi-automated edits that would be extremely tedious to do manually, in accordance with the bot policy. The bot is approved and currently active – the relevant request for approval can be seen here. Administrators: if this bot is malfunctioning or causing harm, please block it. |
B-bot is a bot operated by User:B. If you would like to ask about something, please do so at User talk:B as that page will be monitored more frequently than this bot's talk page.
If the bot is malfunctioning and you wish to stop it, please edit the page User:B-bot/STOP to have only the word STOP (and nothing else).
This bot tags orphaned non-free images with {{subst:orfud}} and notifies their uploaders. If you would like to opt out of such notifications, you may add one of these templates to your talk page:
- {{nobots}} - block all bots
- {{bots|deny=B-bot}} - block this bot in particular
- {{bots|optout=orfud}} - opt out of notifications of orphaned fair use images from this bot and any other compliant bot or script
Please note that under WP:NFCC#9, images used under a claim of fair use are NOT permitted outside of article space. If an image is used only in user space, on a template, in a draft, etc, it is still considered "orphaned".
The source code for this bot is at User:B-bot/source. Any interesting errors / events are at User:B-bot/Event log.

[edit]Orphaned Non-free
[edit]One of Wikipedia's missions is to promote the growth of free content, that is, content which can be used and adapted without restrictive copyright restrictions.
Though we prefer to use it as rarely as possible, our non-free content policy permits non-free images to be used under a claim of fair use in certain limited circumstances.
Because non-free images are only permitted in articles, if a non-free image is not currently used, it will be deleted. You received this notice because an image you uploaded is non-free and not currently used in an article.
FAQ
[edit]Q: The image is not orphaned - someone vandalized the article and I have reverted it.
- A: You may remove the {{di-orphaned fair use}} template from the image and it will not be deleted. This bot will automatically recheck the image the night before it is due to be deleted and automatically remove the template, if you have not already done so. (Even if nobody removes it, admins always check before deleting whether or not the image is actually an orphan.)
Q: Why did you notify me? I didn't upload the image.
- A: I am notifying the first contributor in the image's history. If that is not you, please let me know and I will look into it.
Q: I don't want to receive any of these notifications.
- A: Please see the template {{bots}} for information on how to opt out. Adding {{bots|deny=all}} or {{nobots}} to your user talk page will block all bots, {{bots|deny=B-bot}} will block this bot in particular, {{bots|optout=all}} will opt out of all bot-supplied deletion notices, or {{bots|optout=orfud}} will disallow any orphaned fair use notices, but permit other deletion notices. Please note that only bots will obey these requests and so you may still receive notices from users tagging manually.
Missing Permission
[edit]If you upload an image that you, personally, did not create, or which you have previously published outside of Wikipedia, permission to use that image must be on file in our OTRS system.
If you received this notice, then either you, or someone on your behalf, tagged the image with the {{OTRS pending}} template. (This tag may have been added automatically based on your choice in the drop down at the time of upload.)
Though there is frequently a backlog, your image was uploaded long enough ago that a message sent should have been received.
FAQ
[edit]Q: I sent a message months ago, you should have it.
- A: Unfortunately, things get lost. Your message might have been misidentified as spam. It might be that whoever read it couldn't tell what image you were talking about. You might have sent it to a queue other than permissions-en. As of April 2015, the permissions-en queue automatically sends out a reply to all messages that come in. This reply contains a ticket number. Please post a message to WP:OTRSN giving this ticket number and the name of the image. We can use that to find your message that you submitted. If you did not receive an automatic reply or cannot find it, please re-send your message to [email protected] and let us know at WP:OTRSN that you have done so.
Adding {{bots|deny=all}} or {{nobots}} to your user talk page will block all bots, {{bots|deny=B-bot}} will block this bot in particular, {{bots|optout=all}} will opt out of all bot-supplied deletion notices, or {{bots|optout=npd}} will disallow any "no permission" notices, but permit other deletion notices. Please note that only bots will obey these requests and so you may still receive notices from users tagging manually.
Tasks
[edit]BRFA | Name | Date | Source | Schedule | Details |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
B-bot | Orphaned fair use tagger | 2015-05-01 | source | Twice daily | Tags orphaned non-free images with {{subst:orfud}} and notifies the uploader |
B-bot 2 | No longer orphaned checker | 2015-05-19 | source | Once daily | Check images in the dated orphaned non-free category that is due for deletion tomorrow to see if they are still orphaned. Remove any from the category that are not. Log any removals to the bot's event log in case I (or anyone else) would like to manually inspect them for NFCC compliance. |
B-bot 3 | OTRS Dated Filer | 2015-06-04 | source | Once daily | Create monthly {{OTRS pending}} and {{OTRS received}} categories. Add dates to any {{OTRS pending}} and {{OTRS received}} tags that are missing them. |
B-bot 4 | Expired OTRS pending tagger | 2015-06-11 | source | Once Daily | If an {{OTRS pending}} tag is in place longer than the backlog, warn the uploader and tag it with {{subst:npd}}. |
B-bot 5 | Daily Page Creator | 2015-06-23 | source | Once Daily | Creates any requested page at midnight, if that page has not already been created. The list of pages is at User:B-bot/Daily page creator pages |
Pending | Expired OTRS received tagger | TBD | Pending | Daily | If an {{OTRS received}} tag is in place longer than the backlog, warn the tagger and (maybe?) post a periodic summary at WP:OTRSN. |
Pending | OTRS helper | Pending | Pending | Daily | Notify WP:OTRSN for any OTRS edit filter violations. Notify WP:OTRSN if {{OTRS backlog}} is not updated. Keep track of images that previously had {{OTRS pending}} or {{OTRS received}} and if they do not get a {{OTRS permission}}, then post a notice at WP:OTRSN. |
Future bot tasks
[edit]For version 1.1 of the orphaned fair use task, I plan the following:
- Hold all notifications until the end of the process. Then merge multiple notifications for the same user together rather than spamming their talk page.
- Log any notifications that fail (due to network error, Wikipedia down, etc) to a local file on my computer and retry them on the next run, if the user has not already been notified by someone else.
