WHAT’S IN THE WORKBOOK?
As we defined the El Grito project, we also created worksheets for each part of the project plan. These worksheets reflect years of WITNESS expertise and existing resources, including, our Video as Evidence Field Guide and Activists’ Guide to Archiving Videos.
PROJECT PLANNING & SCOPE: An online report focused on creating officer dossiers and visualizations of data gleaned from the sample set of videos we analyzed.
COLLECTION & RETENTION POLICIES: The El Grito Collection Policy follows archiving best practices, while considering limited resources and distributed management of the archive by volunteers.
ETHICAL GUIDELINES & CONSENT: Even though all of the videos we analyzed were public, privacy and potential for re-victimizing the subjects and community were priority. Redacting court documents, getting consent from victims and concealing identities (if requested) were made required practice.
VERIFICATION STANDARDS: Verifying the content is a three part process based on WITNESS’ resources and other recommended techniques and tools.
SECURITY & LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: We carefully assessed the risks to the individuals and organizations involved in this project. It’s important to consider potential digital and security risks during the creation and launch phase, as well as long-term needs for security and legal support.

Here are a few great resources to get started:
