Bike Through Wainscott, Sagaponack, and Water Mill

The weather forecast looks pleasant for Saturday, when Lois Peltz and Jerry Brown will lead a bike ride through Wainscott, Sagaponack, and Water Mill for the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society from 9 a.m. to noon.

During the approximately 20-mile ride, participants will also hear from John L. Halsey, "the artisan, ultimate apple connoisseur, and 11th-generation steward of the land," according to the trails society. There may even be peaches and chocolate Slurpees involved.

The trails society asks that participants wear helmets and check the air in their tires ahead of time. The meeting place is the Wainscott School parking lot off Main Street. Advance sign-up is required by emailing [email protected], and the phone number for day-of questions is 917-747-0885.

The Rev. Benjamin (Chaps) Shambaugh, who serves in the Coast Guard’s Auxiliary Chaplain Support program, became the branch chief of the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area East on Jan. 1. In that role, he will oversee chaplains who care for Coast Guard members and their families from Canada to the Caribbean and in Europe and other areas abroad.

Deep History in Sag Harbor Headstones’ Restoration

While Captain Beebee’s headstone now sits pristine atop the hill next to the Old Whalers Church, the rest of the family’s six plots sit in disrepair. Recently, however, the museum received a $10,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, which will allow for the restoration of the remaining headstones.
