"Escaping Expulsion" is the twenty-first episode of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House. It premiered on June 19, 2021, and is the second episode in the second season.
Synopsis[]
When Amity's parents get Luz, Willow and Gus expelled from Hexside, Luz strikes a dangerous deal with them to get back into school.
Plot[]
Just before heading to school, Luz is teaching Eda and Lilith about Glyph Magic and encourages them to learn about altering glyphs to do different things. Lilith follows Luz's instructions precisely, but Eda, impatient to get her powers back, tries experimenting with different glyph combos instead of learning the basics first. All of which end up blowing up. While leaving the two sisters to study, Luz heads off to school, where she is greeted by her friends, Willow and Gus. Amity also greets her with a homemade fairy pie, filled with live fairies. Just then, they are all called to Principal Bump's office, where they meet Amity's parents, Alador and Odalia Blight. Believing Luz, Willow and Guz are a distraction to Amity and do not uphold the same status as them, they force Principal Bump to expel them. Luz, however, refuses to accept this. She, along with Willow and Gus, try everything to get Principal Bump to change his mind. But because of how rich and powerful the Blight family is, Bump cannot let them back in, even though he would like to have them back. Amity is unable to help, as she does not have the courage to stand up to her mother.
After Willow and Guz's parents find out about them being expelled and sent home, Luz goes to Blight Manor to talk with Mrs. Blight. She arrives to find her and her husband preparing for their latest presentation of new abominations. Mrs. Blight agrees to let her and her friends back into Hexside if she assists in demonstrating their latest products, a job that Amity usually does. Luz agrees to, but soon regrets it when she discovers the presentation is on abomination-based weapons.
Meanwhile, Eda continues to experiment with glyph combos, all of which still end up blowing up. Lilith on the other hand is doing a lot better. By covering the basics, she can cast ice magic perfectly. She even creates an ice sculpture of Hooty. Eda tries overlapping the glyphs into a "super-glyph". It does not blow up, but it does create spikes of ice which grow out of control and encases everything in the living room. Eda tries to deal with the issue herself, but after King gets trapped in ice, she calls Lilith for help.
After returning home, Amity finds out her mother has taken Luz to Blight Industries to demonstrate their abomination products. Accompanied by Willow and Gus, they sneak into Blight Industries, disguised in cloaks. They soon find Luz on stage, being attacked by all types of abomination-based weapons. After surviving an abomination armed with a crossbow, Mrs. Blight presents the last product for the evening. It is a huge, armored abomination known as the Abomiton 2.0. Realizing the danger, she is in, Amity hurries to her rescue, while Luz does her best to fight off the Abomiton. The Abomiton almost finishes her off, but Amity steps in to protect Luz. She holds down the Abomiton, ignoring her mother's orders. For the first time in her life, she stands up to her and threatens to destroy the Abomiton in front of her investors unless she lets her friends back into Hexside. Mrs. Blight reluctantly agrees, but since the Abomiton will not stop until its targets are completely destroyed, Amity and Luz play dead when it hammers them down, ending the presentation. This leaves the investors impressed. Mrs. Blight does not want to allow Luz, Willow, and Gus back into Hexside, but has no choice as Blights always uphold their end of the deal. Her husband advises her to let it be and points out that Amity is getting stronger in her magic, strong enough to someday become a Coven head.
Luz returns home, exhausted and beaten up. Eda and Lilith have learned a and discovered how to combine different glyphs to cast different spells. According to Lilith, the glyphs are like words that command the magic around them instead of containing it like witches do. Overlapping them like Eda did was like screaming different words at the same time. So, the spell got confused. But Lilith found a way to organize the glyphs to combine and specify whatever spell they want to cast. Back at Blight Industries, Mr. and Mrs. Blight are visited by the Golden Guard, who has come to purchase all their abomination weapons for the emperor to build his own private army.

Trivia[]
- This episode along with "Separate Tides" were previewed at the Paley Center in New York City for Pride Month June 5-7 2021. Unfortunately, the episodes were leaked online after the first day of the event.
- The Amphibia episode "True Colors" notoriously also had a similar issue, though in that case it was leaked accidentally through official VOD services.
- Odalia brings up the events of "I Was a Teenage Abomination", "Something Ventured, Someone Framed", and "Enchanting Grom Fright".
- Hop Pop appears on the cover of one of Willow's books. Curiously, said book is about toads while Hop Pop is a frog.
- This episode is Bosook "Bo" Coburn's directorial debut.
- This is the fourth episode in the series were Luz is not seen in her signature outfit besides the intro, First "Understanding Willow", Second "Wing it like witches", and Third "Agony of a witch".
- Willow's fathers speak for the first time. One of her fathers' name is also revealed to be Gilbert in closed captioning.
- Gus undergoes a slight redesign with the characters acknowledging that he is going through puberty. This is due to his voice actor, Isaac Ryan Brown's voice, deepening in between seasons.
- Luz begins to reciprocate Amity's feelings for her.
- The secret message for this episode is found in Alador's workshop and it spells "seas".
- Amity is accidentally open about her affection for Luz; when saving her, Amity says to "stay away from [her] Luz", showing her attachment.
Allusions[]
- The address on the Blight Industries business card, 811 Bruegel Blvd, is named after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a famous painter from the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance along with Hieronymus Bosch, a big inspiration for Dana Terrace when developing the series.
- The 811 could also be a nod to Disney Television Animation address, 811 Sonora Avenue.
- The zip code "120890" is a nod to Dana Terrace's birthday.
- The cup and teapot the abomination butler carries resemble Chip and Mrs. Potts from Beauty and the Beast.
- While figuring out how to get into Blight Industries, Gus suggests making an illusion of female guards, but Willow dismisses this saying "this isn't a cartoon from the '40s". This is most likely a reference to Bugs Bunny often dressing in drag to fool his enemies.
- When King goes to talk to Eda he mutters "No one ever said power comes with responsibility". This is a reference to the famous Spider-Man quote, "With great power comes great responsibility".
