- “Lightyear, Lightyear! I know you can hear me. Return the ship to base right now! Or so help me--”
- ―Commander Burnside after Buzz escapes the base
Commander Cal Burnside is the overarching antagonist of the 2022 Disney/Pixar animated film Lightyear.
Personality[]
Commander Burnside is a well-meaning if a bit short-sighted man. Throughout his life, he has heard of Buzz Lightyear and his determination to get all the humans off the hostile planet of T'Kani Prime and how the people there have mined for crystals in order to test run Buzz's ship to get them off there, but Buzz keeps going into hyper speed and appears at random points in time in the future. When he crawled up the ranks to the position of Commander, Burnside saw that this mining operation was a waste of energy and decides to put an end to it and have the humans embrace the T'Kani Prime planet as their new home, but when Buzz comes to his timeline, Burnside finds his views challenged by the ever-dedicated Lightyear.
Role in the film[]
Commander Burnside approaches Buzz who is in Alisha's former room where Burnside explains that he was moving to his new room just as he introduces himself to Buzz, recapping that he was a big fan of Buzz when he was young. Just as Buzz replies that he was getting an opportunity to work with him to finish the mission, Burnside decided to stay home through the use of laser shield, which protects T'Kani Prime from pests just as Burnside succeeds over Alisha, making it his new room.
Later when Buzz arrives at the fuel area planning to make a new crystal to fuel his ship, Burnside warns Buzz that he is in violation of the Star Command protocol, telling Buzz to immediately stop his actions and upon noticing two officers calling for backup, Burnside summons the ZAP Patrol to stop Buzz from escaping only for the Patrol to stop, due to Sox helping Buzz do an override to blast off into space again, much to Burnside telling him to return to the base immediately only for Buzz to plan to break the hyper speed barrier in a plan to get everyone home. However, after another 22 years have passed, Izzy shows footage of Burnside alerting the citizens of T'Kani Prime that a group of Zyclopses have attacked the base, planning to send everyone into the perimeter.
In Zurg's flashback where he explained that when he was not greeted as a hero, Burnside and his group of ZAP soldiers prepared to arrest him for stealing the XL-15, only for Zurg to escape to avoid being arrested.
At the end of the film after Buzz defeated Zurg after blowing up his ship, Burnside defeats the harpooned Zyclops attempting to attack Buzz and his allies, followed by a group of ZAP soldiers approaching the group, which the Commander scolds Buzz for absconding with Star Command, stole an experimental spacecraft, and defied a direct order from him. Rather than arresting Buzz, Burnside offers him another plan for him in starting a new version of the Space Ranger Corps called the "Universe Protection Division", offering him to select his team from the ZAP Patrol and train him, which Buzz replies that he already has his own team of Space Rangers. As Buzz and his team begin their next mission, Burnside reports to them that he picked up a signal in the Gamma Quadrant of Sector Four, sending Buzz and his team on their next assignment just before they embark on a new mission. In a mid-credits scene, Burnside is seen sitting in his office feeling comfortable of a laser shield protecting the facility he is in from insectoids.
