Asia is a themed land at Disney's Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Along with showcasing animals from throughout the continent, Asia is also the home of two of the park's thrill rides. The section opened in 1999 as the park's first expansion land.
Theme[]
Just as the park's Africa section is set in the fictional village of Harambe, guests to Asia find themselves in the tiny Kingdom of Anandapur which means "place of delight"in Sanskrit. In it's past history, the kingdom was larger and ruled by benevolent maharajahs. Though the kingdom's ancient founder Anantah believed in living in harmony with nature, one of his 16th century successors Bhima turned a portion of the forest into a hunting palace. After his death, his followers returned to focusing on the beauty of nature and years later, the ruins of the old hunting palace was opened to the public as a nature preserve. Since then, the "residents" of the village have devoted much of the outskirts to the conservation and study of the region's animal life.
On the outskirts of the Anandapur Township is a neighboring village, Serka Zong, the "Fortress of the Chasm", which lies in the shadow of the Himalayas and serves as a gateway to the Forbidden Mountain. Serka Zong is home to the Royal Anandapur Tea Company, which would ship tea by train through a pass in the Forbidden Mountain. However, this activity provoked the wrath of the Yeti, resulting in the train line's closure for years, until a group called Himalayan Escapes decided to start the rail line up again for tourism.
