deleting horizontal history list in iPad safari

When i open Safari in ipad, it presents a very long horizontal list of historical tabs across the bottom of the screen. How do I delete them? They are not accessible from the History list, or Reading List, in the sidebar, and which I regularly check. How do I delete this list and disable it? Thanks
