Why are my iPhone Messages going to an old number?

My wife got a new iPhone with a new number. I have deleted her old phone number from my contact list and update it with her new number. But when I send her a message it is directed to her old number. I have already checked her phones settings and it only has her new number. Is there something I need to do on my iPhone?
