DIY Stacked Wood Lamp: Knock Out Knock Offs No. 1
Last Updated on March 3, 2022
Hello friends! You may remember that this time last year, I participated in the Knock Out Knock Off series with some of my very talented friends {click here to see my projects from last year}! #knockoutknockoffs Well, it's that time again this year! For the next four months, I am participating in the Knock Out Knock Off series with a phenomenal group of talented bloggers. Each month, we will be bringing you knock off projects from some of your favorite retailers: Anthropologie, Land of Nod, CB2 and Crate and Barrel. This month, we are tackling projects inspired by Anthropologie. Buckle your seat belts….you are in for a treat! BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE PROJECTS FROM MY FRIENDS AT THE END OF THIS POST–THEY ARE AWESOME!
I don't know about you, but I LOVE Anthropolgie. Like, I feel it deep in my soul, kind of love. But I only purchase something from Anthropologie about once a century because everything is out of my budget. Well, I knew when I saw this lamp that I had to have it, but there was absolutely, positively NO WAY I was going to spend $598 on it–that doesn't even include a lamp shade. So, I came up with a DIY version–YAY! Now, check out my version that cost me only $40! Then read on to learn how to make your very own! This post contains some affiliate links. Materials Needed for DIY Stacked Wood Lamp
- 3-4 inch diameter birch wood slices {these are the exact ones that I ordered from Amazon– the price varies quite a bit depending on when you order. When I ordered mine, I paid $24.99 for 20 slices–now they cost less!}
- Lamp kit
- Depending on the type of lamp shade you have, either a lamp harp or a Uno lamp shade adapter
DIY Stacked Wood Lamp Tutorial
1) First, you need to drill a hole in the bottom wood slice for the cord to thread through. Start by drilling a hole through the SIDE of the wood slice; stop drilling once you reach the middle of the wood slice.
2) Then, drill a hole in the middle of the TOP of the wood slice so that it meets up with the first hole you drilled.
3) Next, thread your lamp cord through the tunnel you have just created.
4) For the remaining slices, you just need to drill a hole in the center of them. Then continue threading them on the lamp cord one at a time. Add as many slices as you need to achieve your desired lamp height.
5) Once your have threaded all of your slices onto the cord, put the threaded nipple into place. You will want to screw it down into the wood slice, leaving about 1/4 inch exposed. {Note that I wound up removing the washer shown in the photo below–no particular reason why, you can use it if you want!}.
6) After your nipple is screwed into place, attach your lamp parts in the order shown in the photos below {sorry–NO CLUE what to call them}. Screw this collar looking part onto the threaded nipple.
7) Push the metal and cardboard up on the lamp socket to access the electrical connections. Connect your wiring, then push the metal and cardboard covering back into place.
8) Pull any excess wire through the bottom of your lamp and then push the lamp socket into place.
9) Next, slide your wood slices down toward the plug, around 8 inches or so. Starting from the top, of your lamp, use wood glue to attach each slice to the slice above it. Work you way from top to bottom. Allow the glue to dry.
10) The final step is the screw in a bulb and attach your shade. Depending on the type of lamp shade you have, you will attached either a lamp harp or a Uno lamp shade adapter.
That's it! Isn't it BEAUTIFUL?!

Love this rustic idea. I have a box full of alder rounds drying and waiting to become the border on my bathroom mirror. Maybe a mini lamp for my kitchen counter will be added to the list. Thanks for the inspiration!
Here’s another photorealism attempt, based on this photo Enjoy!
I actually think your lamp looks better than the inspiration lamp! And I never knew you could be wood from Amazon; I think to explore Amazon even more ! Thank you for the inspiration.

I LOVE your lamp. And it is super easy to make…Do you know if the birch wood is the only kind that would work for this lamp? I want to make it for my dad’s desk in his office but am afraid the color is too light for him. What do you think?!
Hi Jessica! Any wood slices should work! I hope that helps!

Amazing! I always see birch wood projects and think, Well, I’d do those too if I lived in an area with birch wood. It never even crossed my mind to simply order them like I do everything else! The lamp really goes nicely with the rest of the room.
This is such a great Idea! you are so BRAVE for taking on a lighting project. I always dread lighting projects….GO YOU!
