High school wrestling: West Albany and Lebanon combine for five Mid-Willamette titles

At the Mid-Willamette Wrestling Championships held in Salem, the Bulldogs claimed three individual district champs while the Warriors claimed two.

Dallas led the way with seven individual titles and Silverton had two.

For Lebanon, it was two brothers who got the job done.

First was Seth Wynn who scored a 6-0 decision over Dallas’ Thomas Talmadge at 150 pounds.

“It’s good to have the work pay off,” Wynn said.

That was soon followed by his older brother Josiah, as the senior got a pinfall victory over Dallas’ Asher Olliff.

While both brothers were pretty nonchalant about their wins, the older brother was able to enjoy the moment.

“It’s awesome,” Josiah Wynn said. “I always wanted my little brother to win it. He’s way better than I am, and he pretty much put it in the basket. And I was like, ‘I can’t lose now because he won.’”

The day got started with West Albany freshman Garrett Koehler claiming his first district title at 106, defeating Dallas’ Nathan Ramirez by an 8-6 decision.

Did he expect to sit at the top of the podium heading into his first district final?

“I did,” Koehler said. “I really dreamt of this.”

After a few wins by Dallas in a row, West Albany got back to the top of the podium at 138 with Blake Linton. He was trailing on the scoreboard when he was able to turn Dallas’ Andrew Craven around into a pinning combination to escape with the title.

“Just keep fighting,” Linton said. “You never know when it’s over. … Just kinda fell in my way.”

The third West Albany district title was won by junior Henry Samoylich, who scored a 15-3 major decision over Lebanon’s Zechariah Halsey.

“It feels so good.” Samoylich said. “All these years of work, and these amazing coaches have helped me get there.”
