Lanterns is an upcoming superhero crime drama television series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, and produced by DC Studios. Set to premiere on HBO in 2026, it will follow Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate and battle dangerous threats to protect Earth.

Plot[]

Two human members of the Green Lantern Corps, veteran Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart, act as intergalactic law enforcement and battle powerful threats on Earth with their power rings. As they investigate a murder in Nebraska, they are led to far darker mysteries and reckonings.[3]

Development[]

In 2019, it was announced that Warner Bros. and Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti were developing Green Lantern for HBO Max.[16] The series was intended as a "space opera"[17] and would have centered around Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, who were respectively cast with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine. Scripts for an eight-episode season were completed by showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith, but in 2022, after a number of changes in leadership at WB, Grahame-Smith departed and the series was completely redeveloped to instead focus on John Stewart.[18]

When James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired as co-CEOs of DC Studios, they agreed to part ways with Greg Berlanti and scrapped his series in early 2023. They instead began developing Lanterns, which Safran called "a terrestrial-based investigation story" in the vein of True Detective, starring Hal Jordan and John Stewart.[17] In June 2024, Lanterns was given a straight-to-series order at HBO, with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner and Damon Lindelof and Tom King serving as co-writers and producers.[19]

Production on Season 1[]

Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre were cast as Hal and John respectively in 2024,[4][5] and Kelly Macdonald later joined the main cast as Sheriff Kerry.[6] Principal photography for Season 1 was initially set to run from January to June 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia,[20] but Gunn and Safran managed to move production to Los Angeles, California in time for filming to commence in February, with the hopes of increasing jobs in the state to help its economy recover from the January 2025 Southern California wildfires.[21]

The season will consist of eight episodes, with James Hawes directing the first two,[22] and others directed by Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Lanterns is a part of "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters", the first wave of projects in the DC Universe.[23]
