What is your degree program and anticipated graduation date? PhD, religious studies, 2026

Please describe your research: I am researching African women immigrants in Iowa. My research interest is centered around the experiences of these women, their resettlement stories, and how they have engaged in homebuilding in Iowa. With the use of storytelling, the research investigates the different reasons that draw African immigrants to the State of Iowa and looks into ways to resolve the challenges that they face.

In simple terms, why does this research matter? This research matters because it helps in understanding that patterns of immigration continue to change with time and place. It is necessary that the lived experiences of African women are explored because it will aid policy formulation and implementation. It is also useful in knowing ways in which resettlement can be easier for the immigrant population.

How soon after starting at the University of Iowa were you able to participate in research?
I was able to participate in the research after my first year in the PhD program.

How has being involved in research made you more successful at the University of Iowa? My research has honed me with the necessary skills in ethnography- a research method in the humanities.

What are your career goals and/or plans after graduation? I am interested in ethnography as a method for doing research, so I see myself engaging in more research using this method.  Also, I am passionate about issues around immigration and envision myself consulting for international organizations like the IOM (International Organization for Migration).
