A production by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation which has been running since mid-November is about to embark on an island tour. The Word Progress on My Mother’s Lips Doesn’t Ring True is a play by Matei Vizniec, one of Romania’s best known and widely performed contemporary writers. Acclaimed director Varnavas Kyriazis brings it to life in Greek, stripped down and ever-relevant.

Vizniec’s play is a painfully topical tale about loss and mourning, rootlessness, the refugee experience and the longing for home. The struggle for survival and a better life is conveyed through moments of high drama infused with touches of humour.

This winter, the story is being staged in Cypriot theatres for the first time, exploring the interplay between the living and the dead, poetry and prose, and realism and surrealism. Complementing Kyriazis’ exquisite direction are the musical themes of Michalis Christodoulides and a first-class team of actors and creatives.

Apart from shows in Nicosia every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the play will travel to more Cypriot cities within the new year.First, it will make a stop in Paphos on January 4, then in Larnaca on January 10 and finally in Limassol on January 15.
