Artificial Intelligence in Society
On June 11, 2019, the OECD published AI & Society, a book that gives a broad overview of the technical, economic, political, and social landscapes of AI, including its positive and negative impacts.
This book contains significant contributions from across the Berkman Klein community. In particular, Sandra Cortesi, Director of Youth and Media, and Amar Ashar, Assistant Director for Research, contributed to the section on “Inclusive and Sustainable Growth and Well-Being.” And Ryan Budish, Assistant Director for Research, Mason Kortz, Clinical Instructor at the Cyberlaw Clinic, and Finale Doshi-Velez, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, contributed to the section on “Transparency and Explainability.”
The book will be an important resource for decisionmakers in the public and private sectors. It reviews salient public policy considerations and maps the AI governance landscape at national and international levels. It will hopefully bolster evidence-based policymaking that reflects the important ways in which AI is impacting all facets of society, and its potential for transformative change in the future.
The book already has helped shape the adoption of the OECD’s AI Principles and will provide the analytical basis to start building the OECD’s forthcoming AI Policy Observatory, an inclusive and multi-stakeholder hub for AI public policy.
