The purpose of the paper is to expand and broadened perspectives in relation to these three concepts with the view to encouraging innovative practice in promoting lifelong learning and pathways. The concept of access will be discussed with reference to the spectrum of access models as outlined by . Secondly, recent research into the up take and occurrence of RPL in Australia will be presented along with differing models of RPL from international literature. Lastly, the concept of pathways and progression routes will be explored. The discussion will conclude with the presentation of a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to promoting lifelong learning. The model was originally developed as a result of current doctoral and Adult Learning Australia (ALA) funded research focused specifically on jobseekers, however the model and its four integrated components has much wider applications. For example, it can be used with those groups with little or no post compulsory education and training, groups that are under-represented in tertiary education and those in transitional phases of their life course (re-enter, redundancy, career change). The model draws upon several bodies of knowledge, which includes theories of self and identity, social cognitive theory, models of adult learning, educational and cognitive psychology and new literacies studies. The paper offers insights into innovative ways to promote pathways and lifelong learning with ramifications and applications across all sectors and within a variety of learning communities.

The causes and drivers of skill shortages involve a complex interplay between macroeconomic trends and proximal causes. This paper draws together recent policy initiatives and research on skill shortages in the Australian context and the implications this has for regional Australia. Skilled migration has become a key element in Australia’s strategy to address major human capital issues and imperatives and specific reference is made to regional skilled migration initiatives as a “glocalised” response to regional skill shortages. Recent reforms in migration policy towards a demand-driven, economic modelling system, has seen greater input from states/territories and regions into the required skills and types of targeted skilled migration programs needed to assist in meeting regional skill shortages. The paper reviews several pieces of research on regional skilled migration before concluding with some key issues and directions for future research in relation to the role and effectiveness of the regional skilled migration scheme in assisting Australia to address regional skill shortages.

The difference between formal, non-formal and informal learning has long been a contentious issue. These issues and developments have a direct impact on the HRM related areas of skill recognition and workplace learning in an era of low unemployment rates, looming skill shortages and declining rates of workforce participation. This paper reports on data from a learning grid in a Learning Survey of labour market program participants (n = 172). We find that life (informal learning) and work experience (non-formal learning) are relatively more important for gaining the self-reported skills than formal training/study. We also find an interaction between skill source and skill type.

The emergence of mixed methods in business, management and organisational research has only recen... more The emergence of mixed methods in business, management and organisational research has only recently begun to take the notice of researchers and academics. There is relatively less literature and commentary on the use of mixed methods in applied business than there is in social sciences, health and education where mixed methods has witnessed higher levels of acceptance. Nonetheless, those who have researched the use of mixed methods in business and management fields have found an increasing utilisation of mixed methods. This chapter will explore the emergent body of literature and research which is attempting to gauge the use of mixed methods across a variety of business and management fields. This will be followed by the presentation of research findings into the research designs and methods utilised in DBA theses from the International Centre for Professional Doctorates at Southern Cross University in Australia. The research points to mixed methods as being the most frequently utilised research approach by DBA candidates (39%). This exceeds the number of purely quantitative theses (32%) and purely qualitative theses (29%). Of all the DBA theses (n=186) examined 41.4% (n=77) have been Australian based.
