Object history
Deutsch: Im Wappen der neuen Großstadt wurden sinngemäß die aus der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts stammenden Schöffensiegel und späteren Wappen der beiden ältesten Gemeinden Barmen (der Bergische Löwe auf einem Garnbündel als Gewerbezeichen stehend, 1516) und Elberfeld (der Bergische Löwe mit dem Rost, dem Symbol des Schutzheiligen Laurentius, 1556 und früher) verschmolzen.

Dabei wird der Bergische Löwe als allen vereinigten Gemeinden gemeinsames Landeswappen auch Cronenberg, Ronsdorf und Vohwinkel gerecht, deren Wappen aus jüngerer Zeit zum Teil "unheraldisch", also nicht den heraldisch strengen Regeln entsprechend, zu betrachten sind.

Das Preußische Staatsministerium genehmigte durch Erlass vom 29. Juni 1934 das von Wolfgang Pagenstecher geschaffene Wappen.
