Streamlined and specialised
Mark Boulton is running a tiny agency again, encouraged by a gap he sees at the smaller end of the market. There is, he tweets, an opportunity for nimble studios offering specialist creative services to do well in spite of a deepening recession.
I agree, noting this also applies to specialised individuals. My current clients are no strangers to big teams and bloated process but sought a focused, one-to-one relationship for these projects. One describes it as “a breath of fresh air.”
Joe Leech echoed my optimism. He’s thriving as an individual product specialist and UX coach. Clients like his are keen to avoid unnecessary overheads, benefitting from what he describes as “direct access to very experienced individuals” when they need it.
I wrote about intimate client relationships a few weeks ago, and I’ve since received messages of appreciation from those who’ve always worked this way or are back at it. I’m encouraged to press on, especially after another week of satisfying client work. When time allows, I’ll be restructuring my Work page with a specific and clear menu of products and services that will form the backbone of my practice.
