I was interviewed by electronic musician Veryan for the third issue of her Insights and Sounds magazine. We enjoyed an in-depth discussion covering how I capture sounds and make music, why I’m compelled to document places in such detail, the beauty of Japan, the influence of land art, and a few clues as to what might happen next.
Along with the magazine, the download includes three excellent tracks that Veryan made with field recordings provided by myself and the other interviewees, Jilk and Everyday Dust.
In related news, Caravan Tokyo was featured on the latest episode of Electronic Odyssey, and you can listen back on Mixcloud.
I was delighted to be the first guest on Matt Davey’s new podcast. It was an opportunity to reflect on my career path and attitude to design, and choose five songs that really mean something to me.

Confirmation then, that Net magazine will close. The monthly publication supported so many of us over the years, and I’ll always be grateful.
Seeing my early work in print gave me confidence, and a profile spread helped my old agency to grow. I was fortunate to be interviewed several times — most notably a four-page feature with accompanying NYC shoot. The magazine was essential reading throughout the 00s, and although of less interest to me in recent years, it continued to introduce new voices and make sense of industry ebb and flow.
The annual awards were valuable, and there was a period where I was either a judge or nominated. I remember a fun night in London when Erskine lost the agency award to Clearleft, and things got a bit boisterous. One year, the venue was superclub Ministry of Sound, which made no sense but was very funny. In Holborn’s more serene Connaught Rooms, I witnessed Geri scoop Designer of the Year, just before our wedding.
It’s the end of an era and a reminder of happier, freewheeling times. Thanks to all who worked on Net magazine over the years, and everyone who contributed.
This week, I had the pleasure of joining polymathic designer and poet Rizwana Khan to record an episode of her all-encompassing, stream of consciousness podcast.
