Making homestyle fried plantain chips is fun and easy. All you need is green plantain, salt, and black pepper. You hardly need a recipe, yet, it is addictive. They won’t last long!.
Crispy Fried Plantain Chips
This recipe is so easy to make, taking roughly 15 minutes to prepare from start to finish. Eat them as appetizers or snacks!
A mandoline is very helpful in making the cutting easier. You can experiment with the thickness; you may like them thicker or thinner.
I used olive oil in this recipe because it has lesser trans fats; however, you can use any other oil of your choice.
This deep-fried plantain recipe is quite addictive, and they are quick and easy to make.
They are a nice alternative to the usual potato chips, and they taste awesome when eaten with Guacamole dip or mayo-ketchup did (Ratio 1:1 or as you please) or simply eat as a snack. They are simply amazing!
In my post on how to make baked plantain chips, I talked about the difference between using green and ripe plantain to make your chips.
The green ones yield more crunchy chips because they crisp better while the ripe plantain yields sweeter tasting chips, they may not be as crisp as the green counterpart. However, if you choose to make use of the ripe ones, try to use one that is just ripe and not overly ripe so that you have that desired crisp and crunch.
Can I bake the plantain Chips?
Absolutely! You can check out my baked version here.
Notes
As soon as you are done frying them, test for the salt. If it needs more salt, add it immediately while it’s still very hot. The Salt will not be able to adhere to the chips once they get cold.
Here are some of the ways to use plantains: Fried, Baked, Bread, Frittata.

Ingredients
- 2 plantains large
- Olive Oil for deep frying
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cut off both ends of the plantain then run your knife through the flesh of the plantain creating a cut from the top to the bottom – Try not to cut too deep into the flesh, you just want to cut through the skin.
- Using a mandoline slicer, slice plantains into long, thin stripes. If the plantain is too long, divide it into two before slicing it.
- Put the cut plantain in a large bowl, and season with salt and black pepper.
- Preheat some Oil sufficient enough to deep fry the plantains. Add the plantains and fry them stirring continuously until they become golden and crispy.
