OpenAI introduced its o3 “reasoning” model, three months after introducing o1. Interesting fact…the company skipped o2 not because of a technology leap, but instead, copyright issues. Perhaps you heard of O2 in the UK?
The OpenAI o3 model represents a significant advancement in artificial intelligence, positioning as a reasoning and complex problem-solving model. And no, this isn’t AGI. But it is innovative, pushing AI into a new era of ‘scaling laws.’ More on that in a bit…
Unlike traditional large language models (LLMs) that rely on pattern recognition, o3 introduces simulated reasoning (SR), enabling it to “think” through problems by pausing and reflecting on its internal thought processes. This approach mimics human-like reasoning, making it capable of tackling tasks that require multi-step logic or novel problem-solving.
OpenAI’s o3 model differs from earlier ChatGPT iterations and other LLMs in several key ways:
Enhanced Reasoning:
o3 uses a “private chain-of-thought” process to evaluate multiple solutions before responding, improving accuracy in complex tasks like coding, mathematics, and scientific reasoning.
Its achieved benchmark scores are close to or surpassing human-level performance in areas like visual reasoning (ARC-AGI) and advanced mathematics (AIME).
Adaptability:
o3 can handle tasks it was not explicitly trained for by exploring multiple solution pathways and selecting the best one through an evaluator system.
Performance Efficiency:
The o3 model demonstrates a 20% improvement in efficiency over earlier models on technical benchmarks like SWE-Bench for software engineering.
Safety and Alignment:
o3 incorporates “Deliberative Alignment,” a feature that allows it to critically evaluate responses against safety protocols, reducing risks of harmful or biased outputs.
Program Synthesis for Task Adaptation: O3 introduces “program synthesis,” enabling it to adapt to new tasks by generating solutions dynamically, rather than relying solely on pre-trained patterns. This approach allows the model to solve novel problems effectively.
Natural Language Reasoning: The model uses advanced reasoning techniques, including “chains of reasoning,” which allow it to analyze tasks step-by-step, improving accuracy and reducing errors like hallucinations.
Benchmark Performance: O3 achieved groundbreaking results on benchmarks like ARC-AGI (87.5% accuracy under high compute) and AIME (96.7% in advanced mathematics). These scores demonstrate its ability to generalize knowledge and reason across complex domains.
Efficiency Gains: The model exhibits improved sampling efficiency, meaning it can achieve more accurate results with less data and compute, making it more adaptable and cost-effective compared to earlier models.
Generalization Abilities: O3’s architecture allows it to learn and adapt quickly with minimal examples, mimicking human-like cognitive abilities and addressing limitations of traditional AI models.
AI leaders refer to this phase of AI model development as the “second era of scaling laws.” Let’s take a moment to unpack what that means.
The “second era of scaling laws” in artificial intelligence represents a paradigm shift in how AI models are developed and optimized. It moves away from the traditional approach of simply increasing model size, compute power, and dataset size—methods that have driven much of AI’s progress over the last decade but are now showing diminishing returns. Instead, this new era emphasizes architectural optimization, training efficiency, and innovative techniques like test-time scaling to achieve better performance without proportional increases in computational costs.
The second era of scaling laws is important for businesses and researchers because it ensures that AI innovation can continue without unsustainable resource demands.
OpenAI’s o3 model is a representative of Inference AI, the stage where a trained model applies its learned knowledge to new, unseen data to make predictions, decisions, or solve tasks in real time.
OpenAI’s o3 model leverages advanced reasoning capabilities during inference. Unlike earlier models that primarily relied on pattern recognition, o3 employs simulated reasoning and a hybrid reasoning framework (neural symbolic learning combined with probabilistic logic) to actively breakdown complex problems and generate actionable outputs.
O3 also redefines ‘inference AI’ by introducing reasoning as a core component of the inference process. This evolution allows it to: 1) Handle tasks requiring structured thinking and logic, such as diagnostics in healthcare or advanced robotics, and 2) Make decisions that are not just based on pre-trained patterns but are dynamically reasoned out during runtime.
The o3 model marks a qualitative leap in AI capabilities, with implications for industries requiring advanced reasoning and adaptability.
It allows for complex problem-solving. For example, o3 excels in areas like robotics, medical imaging, and financial modeling by addressing tasks that involve multi-step logic or novel scenarios.
o3 also mimics human-level reasoning. Tests show that its performance approaches human-level understanding in certain domains, making it suitable for high-stakes applications like scientific research or strategic planning.
So, what will o3 allow you to do differently?
Compared to traditional LLMs, o3 enables businesses to:
Tackle Complex Tasks: Solve problems requiring advanced reasoning, such as optimizing logistics networks or diagnosing rare medical conditions.
Enhance Decision-Making: Significantly enhance your company’s decision-making processes by introducing advanced reasoning capabilities, improving accuracy, and enabling more dynamic, data-driven strategies. This will provide more accurate insights by simulating multiple reasoning pathways before delivering recommendations.
Develop Tailored Solutions: Fine-tune the AI’s reasoning approach for specific business needs, improving outcomes in areas like customer service automation or predictive analytics.
Mitigate Risks: Ensure compliance with ethical standards and reduce the likelihood of biased or harmful outputs
The Key Features of the Second Era of Scaling Laws:
Optimization Over Size:
The focus is on refining model architectures and training methodologies rather than merely scaling up resources. This includes designing smarter algorithms and more efficient neural network structures to maximize performance gains.
Test-Time Scaling:
A significant innovation in this era is “test-time scaling,” which allows models to dynamically allocate more computational resources during inference (when answering questions or solving problems) rather than just during training. This approach enhances real-time adaptability and decision-making capabilities.
Efficiency and Sustainability:
The second era prioritizes balancing performance improvements with computational efficiency. This shift addresses the growing costs—both financial and environmental—associated with training massive AI models, making advanced AI more economically viable and accessible.
Diminishing Returns from Traditional Scaling:
Previous scaling laws relied on brute-force increases in compute, data, and model size, which yielded predictable improvements but are now hitting a “compute-efficient frontier.” Beyond this point, additional resources result in smaller performance gains, necessitating new strategies for continued progress.

OpenAI released its initial version of Sora, a text-to-video AI model that generates high-quality video clips based on your text prompts.
Text-to-Video Generation: Sora enables you to produce videos by simply inputting descriptive text, facilitating rapid content development without the need for extensive technical expertise. But, Sora doesn’t work like you might imagine using ChatGPT. Your movie is comprised of storyboards, where each scene is then described with as much detail as you can provide, allowing you to craft the story from beginning to end.
Asset Integration: You can customize your videos by incorporating your own images and video clips.
Storyboard Tool: Storyboards are the foundation of any good storyteller. This feature allows precise control over each frame, aiding in the creation of detailed and structured narratives.
Resolution and Format Options: Sora supports video outputs up to 1080p resolution and offers various aspect ratios, including widescreen, vertical, and square formats, catering to diverse platform requirements.
Subscriptions: If you have a subscription to ChatGPT Plus, Sora is included at no additional cost. You can generate up to 50 videos per month at 480p resolution, with options for 720p. If you subscribe to ChatGPT Pro, you gain access to high-volume workflows. With this plan, you can generate videos with higher resolutions up to 1080p up to 20 seconds. You can also download videos without watermarks.
While Sora represents a significant advancement in AI video generation, it still has limitations. There’s a big difference between the promotional videos we’ve watched and what’s possible today. For example, the current version of Sora faces difficulties with complex scene generation, physics simulations and maintaining image quality and spatial details. OpenAI is actively addressing these issues similar to its approach to its ChatGPT and o1 models.
Here’s an example of Sora at work…
An AI movie in there parts…
Please create a video that shows a business executive reading the digital version of AInsights newsletter published by Brian Solis. Start with the executive looking confused and overwhelmed with information overload about AI, but her team is looking for her guidance and leadership. Then she reads AInsights, and all the answers are clear toward innovation!
Storyboard 1: A business executive sits at her polished office desk, surrounded by stacks of papers, open devices, and charts depicting complex AI data. Her expression is one of confusion and overwhelm, as she holds her head in her hands. Her team peers through the glass office door, looking expectantly at her for guidance.
Storyboard 2: The executive picks up a tablet displaying a digital newsletter focused on AI insights. Her eyes scan the screen, and her face lights up with clarity and understanding.
Storyboard 3: The executive stands confidently, addressing her team with newfound insights and innovative ideas, the stress replaced by a calm assurance.
Not to be outdone, Google also introduced Veo 2, its advanced ‘state-of-the-art’ AI video generation tool. It’s not widely available yet, but you can join the waitlist over at Google’s VideoFX Lab.
Like Sora, Veo 2 excels in generating realistic videos from text prompts. What sets Veo 2 apart is, for now, the following…
Cinematic Quality: Veo 2 delivers ultra-high-quality videos up to 4K resolution, with the ability to produce extended scenes lasting several minutes. This level of quality promises to meet the demands of professional-grade storytelling and high-end brand campaigns.
Realism and Detail: By understanding real-world physics and the nuances of human movement and expression, Veo 2 creates lifelike videos that resonate with viewers. This makes it ideal for industries where authenticity is critical, such as healthcare, education, and luxury goods. I’m sure Sora will also offer these capabilities, if it doesn’t already by the time I publish this.
Cinematography Intelligence: Veo 2 interprets detailed creative prompts, enabling users to specify cinematic elements such as:
1) Lens Types: For example, “18mm lens” produces a wide-angle perspective
2) Camera Angles: Prompts like “low-angle tracking shot” deliver dynamic, immersive visuals.
3) Effects: Instructions such as “shallow depth of field” create professional focus and framing.
4) Wide Range of Styles: From technical demonstrations to emotive storytelling, Veo 2 adapts seamlessly to diverse subjects and genres.
This is an example I found online, since I don’t have access to VideoFX yet. It’s an elephant drawing an elephant!
For executives, Sora and Veo 2 Veo 2 represent a new class of AI tools that allow teams to create strategic assets that empower your organization to communicate more effectively. They offer the ability to differentiate your brand and transform your content strategy, build deeper connections with your audience, and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly visual and digital-first marketplace.
But with it, will come the need for vision and imagination, creativity, expertise and skills, and the ability to tell a story that people will watch, feel, and share. While any one can create a high quality video, like with any form of content, audiences are never guaranteed.
The impact of OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo 2 on Hollywood is profound, potentially reshaping the entire filmmaking process and industry dynamics.
Studios
For studios, AI video generation tools offer both opportunities and challenges:
Cost Reduction: AI can significantly lower production costs, especially in areas like visual effects and post-production.
Rapid Prototyping: Studios can quickly generate concept art, storyboards, and even rough cuts of scenes, streamlining the pre-production process.
Expanded Creative Possibilities: AI enables the creation of complex scenes and effects that might have been prohibitively expensive or technically challenging before.
Disruption Risk: While major studios have the resources to adopt AI, they may face disruption from smaller, more agile competitors who can now produce high-quality content at lower costs.
Directors
Directors will find their role evolving with AI:
Enhanced Visualization: AI tools can help directors better communicate their vision by quickly generating visual representations of scenes2.
Workflow Efficiency: Directors can iterate faster, experimenting with different visual styles and effects in real-time.
Creative Augmentation: AI serves as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, a director’s creativity.
Skill Adaptation: Directors will need to develop new skills to effectively leverage AI tools in their workflow.
Actors
The impact on actors is potentially significant:
Digital Doubles: AI-generated versions of actors could be used for dangerous stunts, reshoots, or even to extend an actor’s career beyond their physical limitations.
Performance Enhancement: AI could be used to refine or alter performances in post-production.
Job Concerns: There are fears that AI could eventually replace background actors or even lead roles in some productions. I need to think more deeply about this…
New Opportunities: Actors may find new roles in voicing or motion-capturing for AI-generated characters.
Screenwriters
Screenwriters face both opportunities and challenges:
Ideation Assistance: AI can help generate plot ideas, character backgrounds, or even dialogue options.
Script Analysis: AI tools can analyze scripts for pacing, structure, and marketability.
Adaptation Concerns: There are worries about AI potentially writing entire scripts, though current technology is far from this capability.
Collaborative Tool: AI is more likely to become a tool that enhances the screenwriter’s process rather than replacing them entirely.
Industry-Wide Implications
Democratization of Filmmaking: AI tools could lower barriers to entry, allowing more creators to produce high-quality content.
Ethical and Legal Challenges: The industry will need to grapple with issues of copyright, actor likeness rights, and the ethical use of AI-generated content.
Job Transformation: While some roles may be at risk, new jobs focused on AI integration and management are likely to emerge.
Creative Boundaries: As AI capabilities expand, the definition of creativity and authorship in filmmaking may need to be reevaluated.
While AI tools like Sora and Veo 2 present challenges to traditional filmmaking roles, they also offer unprecedented opportunities for innovation and creativity. Before disruption takes over an industry, professional and personal growth comes from those willing to first disrupt themselves. The key for Hollywood will be to adapt to this new technology, finding ways to integrate AI that enhance human creativity rather than replace it. As the technology evolves, we can expect a period of significant transformation in how films are conceived, produced, and distributed.

]]>Earlier this year, I was invited to keynote the Asia Pacific Media Forum (APMF) in Bali. What a privilege it was not only to keynote such a prestigious event, but also visit the magical country of Bali…for the first time! (video is included at the end)
The team shared pictures and video from the event, and in the spirit of sharing, I’d like to also share it with you.
Make.Your.Mark.
In a world reshaped by digital disruption and shifting consumer behaviors, the role of advertising and marketing executives has never been more pivotal — or more challenging. Gone are the days when traditional strategies could reliably drive growth. Today, executives must navigate a confluence of technological innovation, changing human behaviors, and heightened expectations for personalized experiences.
I invite you to watch the presentation when you have a moment. The talk explored the widening gap between consumer expectations and executive strategies, the rise of AI as a transformative tool, and the profound changes in consumer behavior that demand a new approach. For those willing to adapt, this is not merely a time of disruption but one of extraordinary opportunity.
And that’s where we’ll begin…
Let’s review the key insights from the keynote, outlining what advertising and marketing executives must do to thrive in this rapidly evolving landscape. It is both a wake-up call and a rallying cry for leaders to rethink how they connect with their audiences and to take bold steps toward building the future.
“If you’re waiting for someone to tell you what to do, you’re on the wrong side of innovation.”
Many organizations struggle to understand marketing as a strategic growth driver. Instead, it is often seen as a cost center with unclear contributions to the company’s success.
The Challenge: There’s a significant gap between leadership expectations and marketing’s ability to deliver. While 70% of CEOs expect marketing leaders to drive revenue and growth, only 20% of marketers feel equipped with the skills or resources necessary to meet those demands.
What to Do About It…
Upskill Marketing Teams: Invest in training to ensure marketers have the tools and knowledge to integrate growth-focused strategies into their work.
Collaborate Across Departments: Marketing, product, and customer experience teams must work together to align efforts and break down silos that hinder performance.
The growth designer role is emerging as a critical function in modern marketing, combining data-driven decision-making with creative storytelling and user-centric design.
The Challenge: Traditional roles don’t address the need for personalized, outcome-oriented engagement. Growth designers bridge this gap by driving revenue through innovative KPIs and engagement strategies.
What to Do About It…
Hire for Hybrid Skills: Look for professionals skilled in user experience design, behavioral psychology, storytelling, and data analysis.
Redefine Metrics: Shift away from legacy metrics like impressions and NPS toward KPIs that measure actionable outcomes like conversions, lifetime value, and customer retention.
In today’s attention economy, consumers are selective about where they direct their focus. Platforms like TikTok exemplify how attention is fragmented yet deeply immersive.
The Challenge: Traditional marketing approaches fail to resonate in an environment where relevance, immediacy, and personalization are critical.
What to Do About It…
Develop Platform-Native Strategies: Craft campaigns that align with the unique behaviors and formats of each platform.
Engage with Purpose: Focus on creating content that adds value to the consumer’s journey rather than simply vying for attention.
Artificial intelligence is transforming the marketing landscape, enabling marketers to work smarter, not harder.
The Challenge: Many professionals view AI as a competitor rather than a collaborator, missing opportunities to enhance their capabilities.
What to Do About It…
Embrace AI as Augmented Intelligence: Use AI tools to analyze data, personalize messaging, and streamline workflows.Experiment Boldly: Test AI-driven innovations like chatbots, predictive analytics, and dynamic creative optimization to push the boundaries of traditional campaigns.
Post-pandemic shifts have accelerated the rise of the introvert economy, with consumers prioritizing convenience, introspection, and technology-driven experiences.
The Challenge: Traditional engagement models that rely on in-person interactions or broad-based campaigns no longer suffice.
What to Do About It…
Optimize for Convenience: Focus on services and campaigns that reduce friction, such as streamlined checkout processes or subscription-based models.
Reimagine Connection: Design experiences that feel personal and empathetic, acknowledging the more reflective nature of today’s consumers.
Generation Novel is a new type of consumer defined by behavioral shifts rather than age, emphasizing speed, trust, and personalization.
The Challenge: This cohort blurs the lines between digital and physical worlds, demanding seamless, intuitive experiences across platforms.
What to Do About It…
Rethink the Customer Journey: Map out and optimize every touchpoint to ensure a cohesive and satisfying experience.
Prioritize Trust: Be transparent about data use, ethical AI practices, and sustainability efforts to build long-term loyalty.
“As children, we were all artists.”
Creativity is an innate quality we all possess, yet one that often goes underdeveloped in adulthood.
Creativity is not only a human advantage but also the differentiator in crafting memorable, impactful experiences. AI may simulate intelligence, but it lacks the spirit and originality that define true creativity.
In an era where technology and automation dominate the conversation, creativity remains the most uniquely human and irreplaceable skill. Unlike AI, which excels in logic, data analysis, and efficiency, creativity taps into emotional depth, empathy, and the ability to envision entirely new possibilities.
It’s time to rekindle creativity. It’s time to rekindle the curiosity and imagination that drive bold ideas and breakthrough innovations.
The future is not written; it is being created every day by those willing to think differently, embrace innovation, and challenge the status quo. This moment in history offers a rare opportunity to redefine not just marketing strategies but the very way businesses connect with people. The age of AI, the introvert economy, and the evolving attention economy demand leaders who are courageous, curious, and committed to making an impact.
This is your moment to lead. to make your mark. It’s your chance to be more than just a participant in the unfolding future — you can be a leader, a trailblazer, and an innovator who transforms challenges into opportunities.
The future of marketing lies not in simply keeping up with technological advances but in leveraging them to create deeper, more meaningful connections with your audience. By understanding and addressing the changing dynamics of the AI economy, attention economy, and introvert economy, you can transform how your organization engages with the world.
Remember that every ignite moment you create — every experience that feels personal and meaningful — has the power to shape not only your brand’s future but the lives of those you serve. The world is moving fast, but so can you. Take the tools, insights, and inspiration at your disposal and use them to reinvent what’s possible.
Let this be your rallying cry. Embrace AI not as a competitor but as a partner that expands your capabilities. Redefine how you measure success, focusing on the experiences you create and the trust you build with your audience. Above all, give yourself permission to imagine, to be curious, and to wonder. These are the seeds of true innovation.
Your mark will be defined by your willingness to embrace a mindshift, to lead change, challenge outdated norms, and create experiences that resonate. The tools are at your fingertips, the opportunities are vast, and the time is now. Be bold, be innovative, and be human.
“Creativity is a human skill, and the importance of creativity right now has never been greater.”
In a world reshaped by AI, automation, and shifting consumer expectations, creativity is the key to standing out, building trust, and creating lasting impact. Embrace your creativity — and make your mark.

With each successive print, a bull is simplified and abstracted. It is considered as an iconic representation of absolute simplicity.
In 2008, Steve Jobs set out to teach employees at Apple this philosophy.
“You have to deeply understand the essence of a product in order to be able to get rid of the parts that are not essential.” — Steve Jobs
This is a reminder that getting to the essence of what you do or what you create isn’t easy, but it is what will separate you from everyone else.
This is an example of a mindshift. It’s the moment when you open your mind to explore new possibilities and discover extraordinary experiences and outcomes.
Jobs’ connection to Picasso’s “Le Taureau” inspired a new design mindset: “eliminate the unnecessary to get to the essence.” This mindset became the cornerstone of Apple’s design and product development process.
This philosophy of stripping away the non-essential to reveal the core essence of a product can be seen across many iconic Apple products.
Here are just a few examples:
The iMac G3 embodied simplicity with its single, bold, translucent shell. It removed legacy components like floppy drives, focusing on features essential for a modern computing experience.
The iPod’s design, with its simple click-wheel interface and minimalist aesthetic, stripped away the complexity of MP3 players. It became a symbol of Jobs’ philosophy to “deeply understand the essence of a product.”
The original iPhone eliminated physical keyboards and buttons common in smartphones of the era. Its focus on a single, intuitive touchscreen interface represents the essence of Jobs’ idea of simplicity and anticipation of what users would want before they knew it.
The iPad exemplified simplicity by offering a streamlined interface for browsing, reading, and media consumption. Its minimalist design was free from superfluous features.
The Apple Watch reduced the complexity of wearable technology, focusing on a sleek design and essential functionality while integrating it seamlessly into daily life.
Apple’s software interfaces reflect a commitment to clarity and usability, removing unnecessary complexity to create seamless experiences.
Jobs once said, “Our job is to figure out what they’re going to want before they do.”
Mastering the art of simplicity is to master the essence of innovation, to see something others miss, and to deliver it in a way that transforms perspectives and standards. Simplicity isn’t easy—but this mindshift is what separates the ordinary from the extraordinary.
If I can leave you with one final bit of advice, edit. Edit until you arrive at the essence, the art of your work, to make it meaningful and special for someone else. This is the advice Jobs shared with then Nike president and CEO Mark Parker.

Let me start by wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy Holidays!
I recently returned from a wonderful trip to Vienna, where I participated in the Global Drucker Forum. I still need to take some time to write about my experience there—it truly inspired me to think like I did in the early days!
A heartfelt thank you to Stephan Balzer for hosting an incredible conversation about Mindshift and generative AI disruption. Additional thanks to Richard Straub and Julia Kirby for their invitation and unwavering support throughout my Drucker Forum journey. I hope it’s the first of many!
I have to say, Vienna during the holidays is an unforgettable experience.
From there, I spent time in New York before continuing to Chicago, where our ServiceNow team organized an impressive presence at Microsoft Ignite. In my role, I had the privilege of hosting a special executive lunch featuring Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, where we spent an hour exploring how to navigate AI disruption. I will definitely write about this experience!
If you need bulk copies (10 or more, up to the hundreds), I’m also offering some exclusive deals!
If you’ve read Mindshift, I have a personal request: could you take a moment to leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads? Reviews provide valuable insights for potential readers and fuel the algorithms that help books show up in related searches.
As a thank you, if you write a review, please send your mailing address via email—I’ll send you a custom Mindshiftbookmark, hot off the press!
Here’s how I explained it to one media outlet, and I thought I’d share it with you:
A mindshift was born from the phrase, “What we need is a mindset shift,” which I said repeatedly before finally dropping “set” and combining what was left.
While technology is advancing exponentially, our mindsets, approaches, and leadership frameworks are struggling to keep pace. To thrive, leaders must ignite a new form of awareness and creativity—one that transcends traditional business principles and embraces deeper exploration of the unknown, along with a profound understanding of humanity and its evolving needs.
A mindshift represents a profound change in how we perceive the world, approach challenges, and embrace opportunities. It’s not just about adopting new ideas—it’s about rewiring our perspectives, unlearning outdated beliefs, and embracing the future with curiosity and wonder. It’s the key to moving from survival mode to thriving in a future defined by the unknown, uncertainty, and disruption.
A mindshift often occurs when individuals or leaders realize the status quo is no longer sufficient. They recognize that clinging to old mindsets or strategies limits progress. This realization can be triggered by disruptive events such as technological breakthroughs, market shifts, global crises, or personal epiphanies. In these moments, a choice arises: resist change and remain reactive, or embrace a new way of thinking to proactively shape the future.
A mindshift isn’t just about reacting to disruption—it’s about anticipating it, harnessing it, and seeing around corners. It’s a decision to break free from legacy thinking, embrace curiosity, and open the door to new possibilities. Ultimately, a mindshift enables leaders to navigate ambiguity, inspire teams, and drive innovation in a rapidly changing world.
Think of the mindshift moment as a “Ctrl + Alt + Delete” opportunity—a chance to reboot your mindset and take intentional steps toward reinvention. It’s an intellectual and creative upgrade, a gift we can give ourselves and those we care about.
So, let’s go! Let’s embrace a mindshift and share this gift with the world.
Thank you for reading, and wishing you a joyful and transformative holiday season!

My new book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future, just launched. I’m catching up on the biggest news coming out of the genAI world.
Here’s more from OpenAI.
The company recently announced its competitor to Google Search and in some respect, Perplexity, but so far, only in specific applications such as writing and coding. Canvas, provides a new window into collaborating with generative AI.
On the heels of Google’s NotebookLM and building on integrated ‘Co-Pilots’ we see in popular software suites across the board, OpenAI’s Canvas offers the ability to collaborate with AI in the creation of written works and code.
If you’ve used Perplexity Pages, you’ll find that the key difference is that Canvas is more of a collaboration tool in the creation process. Perplexity Pages offers users the ability to create, edit, and publish content derived from Perplexity search and research projects. I use both.
Canvas features a dual-panel window that features a side-by-side layout where users can engage in regular chat while simultaneously working on projects in a dedicated workspace.
The left side is where you partner with ChatGPT. The right side reflects your work, in this case, writing for code.
On the collaboration side, you’ll find a simple interface to chat, upload materials, and collaborate with the AI, which is then reflected in the right panel.
The writing and coding side of the interface offers creating and editing tools similar to those found in Microsoft Co-Pilot, Medium, and Substack. Highlighting specific sections of work here, guides ChatGPT where to help you, make improvements, or offer suggestions.
Additional Details:
Uploading additional files can allow ChatGPT to customize your work or collaborate with you specific to the task at hand.
The interface allows you to edit text or code directly and offers various shortcuts for tasks such as adjusting writing length or debugging code.
You can restore previous versions of their work, which is particularly useful during iterative processes.
Also Canvas can serve as an editor or coach guiding users where areas can be improved, offering suggestions in how to do so.
Essentially, Canvas is an intelligent collaboration partner, collaborative workspace, and a real-time doc and code editor.
Using Canvas, I asked it to tell me more about what it is and how it helps executives. The prompt is the image used for this post! Here’s what was shared…
The Canvas feature changes how we collaborate with AI. Instead of just exchanging words in a chat, Canvas allows us to dive deeper into thoughts, strategies, and ideas. Imagine mapping out a complex AI roadmap, iterating on new concepts, or drafting frameworks—all visually, all in one place.
This is more than a chatbot; it’s a workspace where context persists, where your ideas and insights don’t get lost in the scroll. You can take a conversation to the next level, build on your thinking, and align it with your team’s objectives.
Canvas is designed to help us move from conversation to creation seamlessly. Whether you’re mapping out product strategies, crafting messaging, or refining AI-driven solutions, it offers the clarity of a shared digital space.
This is about evolving our relationship with generative AI—from talking about ideas to building with them.
The response is helpful. As you can see in the post images at the top, the split window is where Canvas changes the usual ChatGPT experience. So now, with a dual interface, you can upload materials, further prompt the interface, and shape the content into a publishable or shareable format. Shift to the right panel and now you can edit, inline, the text to also be publishable or shareable. Highlight text and you can further collaborate with ChatGPT around specific areas to adjust tone, length, or enhance the content to specific outcomes.
OpenAI Canvas represents a creative advancement in how business users can leverage AI for productivity. Its dual-window interface promotes deeper collaboration between users and AI, making it a new type of tool for executives to enhance their workflows, how they create, methods for research and analytics, and more.
Here are a handful of potential use cases for executives in their everyday work:
1. Enhanced Content Creation
Marketing Materials: Executives can utilize Canvas to draft and refine marketing content, ensuring that messaging aligns with brand voice and strategy.
Technical Documentation: The tool aids in creating clear and concise technical documents by allowing users to collaborate closely with AI on complex subjects.
2. Improved Coding Efficiency
Code Development: Developers can leverage Canvas for coding projects, receiving inline feedback and suggestions from ChatGPT while maintaining the overall context of the codebase.
Debugging Support: The ability to highlight code sections and request specific debugging assistance helps streamline the development process.
3. Collaborative Team Projects
Real-Time Collaboration: Teams can work together in real time, using Canvas as a platform for brainstorming sessions or project planning, facilitating better communication and idea sharing.
Iterative Refinement: Executives can treat Canvas as a collaborative partner, iterating on drafts or code until the desired outcome is achieved, rather than expecting perfection on the first attempt1.
4. Training and Development
Skill Enhancement: By using Canvas, employees can improve their writing and coding skills through direct interaction with AI, receiving immediate feedback that fosters learning and development.
5. Data-Driven Decision Making
Report Generation: Executives can generate reports by collating data inputs through Canvas, enhancing the efficiency of data analysis tasks.
Presentation Preparation: The tool can assist in drafting presentations by organizing thoughts and providing structured content suggestions.
For the time being, I’m going to use Canvas as my authoring tool for this newsletter. Let’s see how it goes!

With the launch of my new book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future, I’m a little behind in covering some of the industry’s biggest genAI news!
So, let’s jump right in…
During the summer of 2024, OpenAI previewed a prototype of AI search, designed to offer fast and timely answers with “clear and relevant sources.” It was marketed as a new way to search.
On Halloween 2024, OpenAI officially debuted ChatGPT Search, officially taking on traditional search engines and also Perplexity AI at the same time.
The crux of ChatGPT Search is that it blends a natural language, conversational, interface with real-time info curated by generative AI and provides links to relevant web sources in the results.
SearchGPT retrieves real-time information by integrating advanced AI models with up-to-date web data. It leverages third-party search providers and content from direct partners to deliver current and relevant responses. This approach enables SearchGPT to provide timely answers, including live news updates, stock prices, and weather information, while ensuring transparency through clear source citations.
ChatGPT Search provides allows users to interact with information in a more natural way. What’s important here is that users, I don’t love that term, can ask follow-up questions and the AI will consider the full context of the chat to provide better answers.
SearchGPT can automatically determine when to search the web based on user queries, but users also have the option to manually trigger searches by clicking a small blue search button. It’s best-of-breed historical, intelligent search, combined with real-time web search functionality.
Instead of providing a list of links, I’m looking at you Google, ChatGPT Search synthesizes information to give direct answers to queries, while providing links to sources vs algorithmic results. This allows users to get concise, relevant answers without having to sift through multiple search results to apply a human filter to arrive at the most pertinent result. I can’t say that enough.
We, as users, have to sift through algorithmic results in a personal attempt to find the right results. It’s not always easy or effective, which means that we’ll turn to more trusted, peer-driven, results ons sites such as Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube
Here are some of the key features and differentiators of ChatGPT Search…
Conversational Interface
ChatGPT search combines search functionality with a conversational interface, offering a more intuitive way to interact with information. Users can ask follow-up questions, and ChatGPT will consider the full context of the chat to provide better answers.
Web Search Integration
ChatGPT can now search the web to provide up-to-date information on a wide range of topics. This allows users to get current information on everything from weather forecasts to stock prices, news, and more.
Source Attribution
ChatGPT search provides links to sources for the answers it gives, allowing users to verify information and explore topics more deeply. A “Sources” button below the response opens a sidebar with references for further interaction.
Partnerships with Publishers
OpenAI has collaborated with various news organizations and publishers to ensure reliable information sources. These partnerships include agreements with Associated Press, Axel Springer, Financial Times, Reuters, and several other publishers.
The biggest frustration with search or any social platform these days is that results and feeds are the product of whatever the latest algorithm is on any given platform. Or, results become the product of the best search engine marketers in the game.
On Google, especially, an entire industry and sub-industries exist to uplift results onto page one, or even better, page zero (the summary, now AI, on the top of the results page). But, it doesn’t mean, at least on Google search, that the results are the most accurate. Instead, the result is the most, usually, manufactured, and not aligned to a user’s desired outcome. Even
One of the biggest, unforeseen threats, to conventional search is the conversational aspect of generative AI prompts. Those, for years, users have typed more conversational queries into search boxes, results were algorithmically optimized (or gamed) to align with the search query. We usually referred to it as keyword anthropology.
But unlike Google’s scrolling list of links, ChatGPT provides synthesized, direct answers to queries, potentially streamlining the search process. The goal is to combine web search with ChatGPT’s language understanding to provide more contextually relevant results.
I’ve always believed, context is king. Relevant, intuitive, meaningful content is inspired by context.
You may or may not know, but I’m a huge fan, and customer, of Perplexity. I use Perplexity as a research and deep search engine. I appreciate the sources and citations, which allow me to further understand any given subject by reading and learning at my own direction.
SearchGPT appears to be following this path and I look forward to comparing the results. I’m also a paying customer of ChatGPT, so this is will all be to my benefit!
With that said, OpenAI is taking on Google and Perplexity with SearchGPT.
Let’s breakdown the differences between them for executive users:
Google ranks web pages based on authority, relevance, and SEO factors, providing lists of links to various sources.
Perplexity provides synthesized answers derived from multiple reputable sources, emphasizing clarity and factual accuracy. It allows follow-up questions in a conversational format.
SearchGPT delivers conversational AI-driven answers directly within search results. It adapts responses based on user context and queries.
One use case might be to explore SearchGPT’s ability to help with running competitive analyses…
Business executives can leverage SearchGPT’s real-time data capabilities for competitive analysis in several impactful ways. The integration of real-time search functionality allows for immediate insights into market trends, competitor activities, and consumer behavior, which are essential for strategic decision-making. Key Strategies for Leveraging SearchGPT
1. Real-Time Market Insights: SearchGPT enables businesses to gather immediate insights into market trends and shifts. Executives can monitor emerging trends and competitor strategies as they happen, allowing for timely adjustments to their business strategies. This capability is crucial in fast-paced industries where staying ahead of the curve can significantly impact market positioning.
2. Competitive Analysis and Benchmarking: Utilizing SearchGPT, businesses can conduct thorough competitive analyses by tracking competitor activities and evaluating industry benchmarks. By comparing their performance metrics against industry standards in real time, companies can identify areas of strength and weakness, inspiring innovation and continuous improvement. This information helps executives set achievable targets and adjust strategies proactively.
3. Data-Driven Audience Insights: SearchGPT can provide detailed insights into specific audience segments by analyzing real-time data related to customer preferences and behaviors. This enables businesses to refine their marketing messages and campaign strategies based on current consumer trends, enhancing personalization efforts and aligning more closely with customer needs.
4. Responsive Customer SupportL The platform facilitates efficient customer interactions by providing instant access to relevant information. Executives can use SearchGPT to enhance customer support systems, enabling teams to respond quickly to inquiries with accurate, up-to-date information. This responsiveness not only improves customer satisfaction but also strengthens brand loyalty.
5. Agile Decision-Making: Real-time data analysis through SearchGPT empowers executives to make informed decisions rapidly. By analyzing current market conditions, operational metrics, and consumer feedback as they occur, businesses can adapt strategies swiftly to changing circumstances, thereby maintaining a competitive edge.
6. Identifying Opportunities for Innovation: By continuously monitoring the competitive landscape using SearchGPT, executives can spot gaps in the market or areas where competitors excel. This insight can drive innovation within their own organizations, leading to the development of new products or services that meet emerging consumer demands.
And here’s what that looks like…

My new book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future, just launched! Please join me on the journey to inspire a new genre of leadership and innovation!
Nvidia just dropped a bombshell: NVLM 1.0, an open-source family of large multimodal AI models designed to compete head-to-head—and even outperform—OpenAI’s GPT-4.
The highlight of this release is the NVLM-D-72B, a 72 billion parameter powerhouse that excels at both multimodal tasks (handling text and images) and text-only evaluations. The model has already proven itself in multiple benchmarks, even surpassing GPT-4 in certain mathematical tasks. And here’s the kicker: Nvidia has made it open and accessible, releasing model weights and planning to share the training code. This move democratizes advanced AI, putting cutting-edge technology directly into the hands of organizations, big and small, without the traditional financial and technical barriers.
This is a turning point for Nvidia. Known for its leadership in GPU technology, Nvidia is now flexing its muscles in the AI software space. This strategic shift positions the company to directly compete with established software leaders, reshaping the industry dynamics and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in AI.
Nvidia’s bold move here is about much more than tech—it’s a paradigm shift in how businesses can access and implement AI. By making sophisticated AI more accessible, Nvidia is tearing down the walls that have kept many organizations from experimenting with and deploying state-of-the-art models. For executives, this is an opportunity to accelerate innovation, leverage AI-driven insights, and rethink how AI can integrate into core business processes.
Democratizing AI with Open-Source Access
Nvidia is leveling the playing field by releasing NVLM 1.0 as open-source. This means that advanced AI is no longer confined to tech giants with deep pockets. Businesses of all sizes can experiment, customize, and implement these models, unlocking opportunities to innovate without the prohibitive costs of proprietary systems. Imagine the possibilities when any company can build AI capabilities that were once out of reach.

With Nvidia offering hosted inference on its platform, companies have a cost-effective pathway to integrate AI into their operations. This drastically reduces deployment expenses and lowers the barrier to entry for AI-driven solutions, enabling businesses to scale up their capabilities without the heavy investments often required by proprietary models from the likes of OpenAI.
Flexibility for Tailored Solutions
NVLM models aren’t just powerful—they’re adaptable. Whether it’s automating customer interactions, generating internal reports, or creating personalized content, these models can be customized to fit the unique needs of any business. This level of flexibility empowers companies to enhance productivity, streamline processes, and innovate in ways that are tightly aligned with their specific goals.
Shifting Competitive Dynamics
Nvidia’s move into the AI software arena challenges the status quo, putting pressure on established players like OpenAI and Google. This competition is likely to spur even faster advancements across the industry, as companies push to outdo each other. MINDSHIFT: Lessons from Silicon Valley on how to transform leadership and drive innovation.
Do we shape the future or does it shape us?
That’s the core question in Brian Solis’ new book, Mindshift which provides lessons for corporate executives in transforming leadership and driving innovation. Like so many other futurists, Solis’ work focuses on how we can become irreplaceable in the age of AI. Agency still lies with us, he acknowledges. But unless we use that agency to shape the future, Solis warns, then that future will eventually make all of us eminently replaceable.

]]>John Pearson over at Pails in Comparison published the first Mindshift review and I just had to share it with you.
To be honest, I was nervous. Like anyone who cares about their work, you wonder how others will experience it.
Let me just share the highlights with you…
I can’t praise this book enough! Why? Before you host your next same-old/same-old strategic planning task force meeting—inspire everyone to read this important book.
Mindshift is next to impossible to review adequately—so I’m just going to bullet-point 20 insights that popped out. (I’ve underlined almost the entire book. Oh, my.) And by the way—the book’s design, graphics, and attention-getting charts are amazing. Mindshift is a joy to read.
1. ALVIN TOFFLER: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
2. PLEASERS: “Organizational psychologist Taska Eurich has studied self-awareness, and she’s found that there are two types of self-awareness: internal and external.” The 2×2 chart on page 57 is memorable.
• PLEASERS: High External Awareness and Low Internal Awareness
• AWARE: High External Awareness and High Internal Awareness
• SEEKERS: Low External Awareness and Low Internal Awareness
• INTROSPECTORS: Low External Awareness and High Internal Awareness
3. TITANIC! In 1912, Captain Edward John Smith “was captaining a brand new ship with a novel design. But he didn’t bring a new mindset to the mission. He apparently didn’t open his mind to the possibility that this massive ocean liner, the largest built at the time, might not maneuver as readily as he was used to. As the treasure hunter Bock Lovett says in the James Cameron blockbuster film about the sinking, Smith had ’26 years of experience working against him.’”
4. DISCOMFORT. “When we engage in questioning what we’ve learned from our experiences and interrogating our beliefs, we can feel unmoored. Either we can decide to accept that discomfort and sail forward or we can stay tethered to old ways and become obsolete.”
5. BLACKBERRY? “Just think of all the leaders in business that failed to embrace change: Blackberry, Nokia, Blockbuster, Toys R Us, Borders, General Motors…” and more.
6. AQUINAS. “Italian Christian theologian and philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas once warned, ‘Beware of the man with one book.’” (Chapter 4, “The Beginner’s Mind,” is must-read.)
7. MISTAKES. Stanford Prof Carol Dweck contrasts a “Fixed Mindset” with a “Growth Mindset” and includes these values for a growth mindset:
• “Mistakes help me learn.
• Is this my best work?
• Feedback is valuable.
• I improve with practice.
• I won’t give up.”
She adds, “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?”
8. FAILURE. “Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said that no one is a failure until they start blaming others.”
9. BE CURIOUS! View the eighth episode of the first season of Ted Lasso to learn “What Ted Lasso Can Teach Us About Curiosity.” Ted Lasso quotes Walt Whitman, “Be curious, not judgmental.” View the three-minute clip here. (Hilarious!)
10. HOLY CURIOSITY. “Einstein believed curiosity is one of humanity’s best traits.” He added, “Never lose a holy curiosity.” (There’s that “curiosity” theme again that keeps popping up in my recent book reviews.)
11. MID-POINT SUMMARY. Brilliant! Halfway through the book, Brian Solis summarizes on one page, in BIG print: “What a journey we’ve been on. Just look at how far we’ve come.” On page 121, he reminds us of 10 themes he’s covered, including:
• “Together…we’ve learned that the door is opening to a novel economy, and it’s an era that needs new leadership.”
• Together we’ve… “learned that even though executives might think they do, they don’t always have all the answers.”
12. SIX STAGES OF MINDSET SHIFTING. Now the fun begins in Chapters 7 to 12: “Receive, Perceive, Weave, Conceive, Believe, and Achieve.” Must-read!
13. MINDSET LEXICON. Five words: “Trendsight, Trendsighting, Trendscape Canvas, Trendfluence, and Trendspark.” (I mean…how can you not read this book with your team?)
14. SLOW DOWN! Oh, my. How do we address those looming trends? How do we sleep at night? Brian Solis has two words for us: “Slow down.” (Now he’s meddling! But it prompted me to play this song at the beginning of a meeting I facilitated last week. You guessed it: “Slow Down,” sung by Chuck Girard.)
15. NO BURDEN. “Early on, as we’re learning not just how to track trends but also how to identify them, letting go of the burden of trying to predict the future. That’s not what we’re trying to do here. We are exploring the trends that might impact our ecosystem. It’s a process of getting smart about the promise or potential of emerging trends. It’s also spending time thinking about how those trends could unfold and what those changes might look like.”
16. WONDER WALL! Let’s do this! The “Wonder Wall” exercise on page 129 is worth the price of the book! Solis writes, “Creating a wonder wall activates your powers of curiosity. It helps you connect the dots between the future you envision and where you are today. The process ignites your childlike sense of wonder and helps you consider the questions with a beginner’s mind and a positive sense of possibilities.” He includes 20 questions he’s found helpful. (Guarantee: You will do a “Wonder Wall” at your next strategic planning retreat.)
Here are two questions (“Wondering Samples”) that popped off the page for me:
• “What WSJ or NYT headline would describe our ideal future state?”
• “If we don’t transform now, what will our tombstone read and when?”
There are 18 more “sample” questions—examples of questions your team might write on post-it notes and then post on your Wonder Wall—“the visual reflection of the things that stoke your curiosity and the things that you can’t stop thinking about, that are burning inside of you.”
17. NARRATIVE VS. NUMBERS. The author writes that the three stages of “weave, conceive, and believe” will help to “develop a story for change that sparks curiosity, conversation, and collaboration, ultimately leading to action.” The power of story is explored—very creatively in these chapters (think Pixar’s storytelling approach)—yet with this warning:
Solis mentions Professor Scott Galloway’s research, “Data may be more truthful, but in the battle between narrative and numbers, most of the time humanity picks narrative.” (However, for a slightly contrarian, but very helpful complementary view, read my review of Making Numbers Count, by Chip Heath and Karla Starr.)
18. WIM (What It Means) EXERCISE. I know you will immediately use this planning tool also. “Think of the WIM exercise as a way of getting to:
• …the what,
• so what,
• and now what…
of every trend.”
19. SCENARIO PLANNING. Don’t skip the section on “a common misconception about the nature of scenario planning.” (Learn about IBM’s 1981 estimate that sales of personal computers would peak at 200,000. “Unfortunately, they were a little wrong.” The number was 25 million!)
20. MAKE YOUR STORY PERSONAL. In Chapter 10, you’ll read about “Connecting Trends to the Human Condition by Making Your Story Personal” and stories that appeal to our deepest emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. You’ll learn from “the world’s best-known and most respected screenwriting lecturer” as referenced in HBR’s article, “Storytelling That Moves People.” (And you’ll want to get the popcorn and enjoy the classic movie, Monsters, Inc.)
The author notes that “the best stories are about the human condition we all share”—and page 195 includes a graphic with 18 themes you can leverage. The assignment: “Consider how you might tell a story about a trend in a way that shows how that trend can help your audience with these universal aspects of life.”
Reminder: I told you this book is next to impossible to adequately review. I still haven’t done it, so please read this book yourself. (I might write a second review of this book down the road—it’s that good and it’s that important.)

I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about the Google Notebook, officially named NotebookLM, it’s new AI pilot program, I thought that it would be limited to use by students and educators. I’ve since changed my mind. You could say I shifted my mindset.
So what is NotebookLM? Is it just another tool like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Meta.ai, or Claude?
Yes and no.
NotebookLM is powered by Google’s Gemini Pro language model. But it’s not just focused on pre-existing language models per se. It’s a dedicated workspace trained on specific material users upload to build an intelligent assistant. It’s a bit like OpenAI’s GPTs, but designed specifically as a research and note-taking assistant.
Said another way, Google’s NotebookLM organizes, analyzes, and synthesizes information from specific sources they provide. It combines the power of large language models with user-provided content to create a personalized research assistant. It allows users to upload and interact with multiple sources of information, creating a tailored knowledge base for each project or “notebook.”
Users can upload up to 50 sources per notebook, including Google Docs, Google Slides, PDFs, website URLs, and text files. Each source can be up to 500,000 words long, allowing for extensive research materials.
NotebookLM creates overviews, summaries, key topics, and suggested questions based on the uploaded documents. It can also analyze charts, images, and diagrams within the sources.
Users can ask questions about their sources, and NotebookLM provides answers with inline citations, linking directly to relevant sections of the original documents (a bit of a nod to Perplexity.ai).
NotebookLM allows users to create, save, and organize notes. It can transform selected notes into outlines, table of contents, study guides, or summaries.
Notebooks can be shared with team members, enabling collaborative research and analysis.
NOW HERE’S SOMETHING WILD…
NotebookLM can even generate podcast-style discussions about the content, providing an audio summary of the information. It emulates a conversation between two hosts and is, if you didn’t pick up on nuances along the way, convincing…and fun!
More on this in a bit…
This newsletter is all about understanding the impact of AI trends for busy executives. This one is a bit different as it serves as a personal research assistant, which could bridge the larger work done by actual research organizations and the executives who benefit from their work. NotebookLM doesn’t replace these groups by any stretch of the imagination. But it does help to provoke and enlighten executives to better work with others across their teams and organization.
NotebookLM acts as a virtual research assistant, helping executives and their teams quickly synthesize information from multiple sources. This can significantly reduce the time spent on research and analysis.
Notebooks can be shared with team members, enabling collaborative research and analysis.
But let’s get into some specific applications that where NotebookLM can shine.
Strategic Planning: Executives can use NotebookLM to consolidate market research, competitor analysis, and internal reports to inform strategic decision-making.
Project Management: Teams can create notebooks for specific projects, keeping all relevant documents, notes, and discussions in one place.
Meeting Preparation: NotebookLM can help executives quickly summarize key points from multiple documents, ensuring they are well-prepared for important meetings.
Trend Analysis: By uploading various industry reports and news articles, executives can use NotebookLM to identify emerging trends and patterns in their sector.
Audio Summaries: The new Audio Overview feature generates podcast-style discussions about the content in the notebook to unreal levels. Seriously.
I fed it parts of the MindShift manuscript to see what it could do. And wow. Just wow. I let it cycle five different times, and each were impressive and entertaining. I had a difficult time choosing which to keep.
Take 1
Take 2
I could imagine though, in any research project, creating fun audio content for stakeholders to consume beyond decks, emails, meetings, or reports.
As Google’s audio podcast summaries surmised from Mindshift, “Every step outside your comfort zone is a step toward growth.”
Indeed. Imagine the possibilities.

I’ve known Ray Wang and Vala Afshar for years, too many to count. I’ve also followed the work of Pascal Bornet, also, for too many years to count.
It was a coming home of sorts when I joined them on DisrupTV for a conversation about AI and the mindset needed to think beyond automation. This was also my first public conversation about my new book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future.
It’s been five long years since I’ve published a book, and a lot has changed. What hasn’t changed though is common leadership mindsets and practices. In an era of AI, that has to change. You can’t automate your way to innovation. You can pre-order it now on Amazon or your favorite bookstore for delivery this coming week!
My segments starts immediately following introductions…
Brian discussed his new book “Mindshift,” emphasizing the need for leaders to embrace innovation and challenge legacy models. He highlighted the importance of self-awareness and scenario planning to navigate the “novel economy” shaped by AI. Pascal introduced his book “Irreplaceable,” focusing on the three competencies of the future: AI readiness, change readiness, and human readiness.
Pascal Bornet, the founder and former leader of the “AI and Automation” practices at McKinsey & Company and Ernst & Young and author of Irreplaceable: The Art of Standing Out in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
Pascal stressed the importance of genuine creativity, critical thinking, and social authenticity in maintaining human relevance amidst technological advancements.

OpenAI recently introduced its o1-preview and o1-mini models. Previously rumored as Project Strawberry, o1 represents a significant advancement in generative AI evolution, designed to enhance reasoning capabilities and problem-solving skills.
It consists of two main variants: o1-preview: The flagship model with deep reasoning and problem-solving abilities. o1-mini: A smaller, more efficient model optimized for code generation and technical tasks.
The o1 model uses “Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning in 01 to improve problem-solving. What that means is that o1 breaks down complex problems into smaller, manageable steps, mimicking human thought processes. This allows the AI to tackle problems systematically, improving accuracy, and depth of responses.
As it progresses through the reasoning chain, the 01 model recognizes and corrects mistakes. It can also break down complex steps into simpler ones as needed.
Let’s get this out of the way. The 01 model is slower to deliver results than the standard ChatGPT model. Before you complain, it’s because it’s “thinking” about the output it delivers to you. It’s also learning through a process called reinforcement learning (RL).
RL allows the model to refine its reasoning strategies over time. Through repeated interactions and feedback, o1 learns to recognize and correct mistakes, break down complex problems into simpler steps, and try alternative approaches when initial attempts fail
OpenAI o1 represents a significant advancement in AI technology that has several important implications for business executives and their teams…
The o1 models, particularly o1-preview, excel at complex reasoning tasks, especially in STEM fields. This can help teams tackle challenging technical and analytical problems more effectively.
Some possible scenarios would include more accurate and insightful solutions to complex business challenges, improved performance in fields like coding, mathematics, and logical reasoning, and the potential for tackling previously unsolvable problems.
For example, in mathematical and scientific tasks, o1 significantly outperformed GPT-4o. In one case, o1 solved 83% of International Mathematical Olympiad problems compared to GPT-4o’s 13%.
The advanced reasoning capabilities of o1 models can provide more accurate and insightful analysis, supporting executives in making more informed decisions.
o1’s advanced reasoning can support executives in making more informed decisions by providing deeper analysis of complex data and situations.
With their advanced reasoning abilities, o1 models can also provide more nuanced insights for strategic decision-making. They offer detailed analysis of complex business scenarios and also help in risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
o1 can reassess its outputs, correct errors, and reduce hallucinations, leading to more reliable responses.
The o1 models show particular promise in certain areas:
1) Scientific Research: They can assist with tasks like annotating cell sequencing data and handling complex mathematical formulas.
2) Financial Analysis: The models’ mathematical prowess could be valuable for financial modeling and risk assessment.
3) Software Development: o1 models perform exceptionally well in coding tasks, potentially accelerating software development processes.
The o1 models’ capabilities make them suited for developing AI agents that can handle complex, multi-step tasks. This could lead to, 1) more sophisticated automation of business processes across multiple business groups and systems, 2) AI agents capable of handling of intricate workflows, and 3) reduced need for human intervention (human in the loop) in certain complex tasks.
The last one, for the savvy executive, represents the most important opportunity for the future of business. It’s a “mindshift” from automation to automation and augmentation. It’s not a matter of replacing people, but instead to augment them by super-charging their capabilities. We’ve not spent enough energy imagining what augmented work and outcomes could be, and this is a competitive opportunity.

]]>I can’t believe this day is finally here. I beyond proud to announce my next book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future. It’s my first book since Lifescale released in 2019 and my first business book since X in 2015. Though both books are still timely and continue to inspire readers, it was time for me to take on the subject of leadership.
For the last several years, we have experienced incredible disruption. It also feels like this perpetual disruption is the new normal.
The thing is, that we don’t have to go back to business as usual each time. Doing so is holding us back from progress, and from reaching our potential.
Mindshift isn’t just another business book. It’s a blueprint for the future and written for those who know the future doesn’t wait for anyone.
The Mindshift experience is a call to action for leaders, innovators, and dreamers who want to turn disruption into opportunity. Over the last few years, the world has changed dramatically, and with that, so has the way we lead and create. We’re not just living in times of change—we’re living in times of accelerated transformation, where AI, economic uncertainty, and societal shifts are rewriting the rules of business and leadership.
In Mindshift, I explore what it takes to thrive in this new era. From learning to think differently, to developing a mindset that’s not just adaptable but proactive, this book offers the strategies and insights needed to succeed when the world is constantly changing.
If you’re ready to challenge the status quo, spot emerging trends before others, and lead your team into the future, Mindshift is for you.
Why is this moment so important to me? Because these times have taught me that true leadership is not about following old playbooks or giving into yesterday’s beliefs and biases. It’s about challenging and rewriting them. It’s about asking questions and listening to new voices. It’s about stoking curiosity and imagination. And this book is designed to help you do exactly that.
I invite you to pre-order your copy today.
Be among the first to embark on this journey with me. Let’s create a future that’s shaped by our bold ideas, vision, and, most importantly, our willingness to shift our minds.
The time for change is now, and it starts with a Mindshift.

Please listen!
Most conversations about AI in talent acquisition focus on efficiencies and automating repetitive tasks. However, we are missing the point if we don’t start talking about how AI could help reshape recruiting entirely, making it more efficient but also more effective. Why stop at recruiting? AI could revolutionize work and the whole way we think about careers.
The current limitations of our thinking were really brought home to me when I attended the SmartRecruiters Hiring Success conference last week in Amsterdam. An overarching theme was that automation is a given with AI, and we should think much bigger.
So, what does this mean for TA strategies, and how can TA Leaders ensure they proactively shape the future direction of recruiting?
My guest this week is Brian Solis, Head of Global Innovation at ServiceNow. He is also an internationally renowned digital anthropologist and award-winning author. Brian gave the opening keynote at Hiring Success, and I caught up with him after he left the stage to get his thoughts on the current state of the AI revolution and the future of talent acquisition.
In the interview, we discuss:
• Where is the Gen AI revolution?
• New behaviors, skills, and expectations
• How are companies responding?
• Empowering people with augmented intelligence
• How can we think differently?
• AI-enabled job seekers
• Using an empathetic lens to identify quick wins
• Differentiated use cases and transformational initiatives
• The importance of the human touch
• Three things TA leaders should be doing right now
• What should recruiting look like in five years?

]]>AInsights: Your executive-level insights making sense of the latest in generative AI…
First Perplexity introduced genAI users to the practice of intelligent search. Then Perplexity introduced Pages to reflect intelligent summaries of your research. Now OpenAI is joining the mix to introduce SearchGPT, a genAI-powered search engine designed to take on Google and other generative AI platforms.
SearchGPT leverages OpenAI’s generative AI language models, specifically from GPT-4, to provide more intuitive and conversational search experiences. Instead of just listing links, usually those gamed by search engine optimization (SEO), SearchGPT generates concise summaries and detailed answers, often with relevant links and citations directly embedded in the response.
Let’s explore key features of SearchGPT…
User Experience
Ad-Free Interface: Unlike traditional search engines like Google and Bing, SearchGPT offers an ad-free user experience, which enhances usability by removing distractions.
Enhanced Search Interface: The interface features a larger search box and a three-column layout for easy navigation. Users can toggle between light and dark themes based on their preferences.
Visual Answers: SearchGPT includes a feature for “visual answers,” which provides AI-generated visuals to complement textual information, although specific details about this feature are still emerging.
Real-Time Information
SearchGPT combines real-time web data with AI to deliver up-to-date answers. This approach aims to reduce the effort required to find relevant information by providing clear and timely responses.
Follow-Up Questions
Users can ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner, with the search engine maintaining context from previous queries. This feature makes it easier to delve deeper into topics without starting new searches from scratch.
Publisher Partnerships
OpenAI has partnered with various publishers to ensure that content is properly attributed and linked back to original sources. This collaboration helps maintain a healthy ecosystem for content creators while providing users with credible information.
earchGPT is still in its prototype phase, currently available to a limited group of 10,000 test users. OpenAI plans to gather feedback from these users and publishers to refine the tool further. The ultimate goal is to integrate the best features of SearchGPT into ChatGPT, enhancing its utility as a conversational AI assistant.
SearchGPT, OpenAI’s new AI-powered search engine, presents significant implications for business and marketing executives.
Think about SEO and content strategies today? A large set of resources are dedicated to consumer (customer) search behavior. At one point, Google dominated search and the resulting customer journey. For years I was an advisor to Google around micro-moments and also served as a CMO strategist to help brands design customer experiences and journeys that were optimized for mobile devices. Since then, search has continued to evolve with Youtube, Instagram, TikTok, and now genAI evolving search behaviors and journeys.
I call today’s search opportunities “Ignite Moments.” And they can happen anywhere now, requiring brands to reverse-engineer behaviors and technology platforms to build dynamic, contextual, native, and intuitive journeys for customers at the point of engagement.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity: SearchGPT’s emphasis on high-quality, well-structured content means that businesses need to focus on creating valuable and coherent content. This shift could penalize low-quality, hastily produced content, rewarding those who invest in thorough and meaningful content creation. Remember, Ignite Moments (more here).
Integrate Real-Time Data: The AI’s capability to access and integrate real-time web data means that SEO strategies must adapt to more dynamic and immediate content updates. This could involve more frequent content reviews and updates to stay relevant.
Clear Source Attribution: SearchGPT ensures that sources are clearly cited, like Perplexity, which can drive traffic to original content creators. This transparency can enhance the credibility of information and improve trust among users.
Reduced Dependency on Ads: The ad-free nature of SearchGPT might challenge traditional advertising models. Businesses will need to explore new ways to reach their audience, possibly focusing more on organic search strategies and content marketing.
Adoption and Adaptation: Convincing users to switch from established search engines like Google will be a challenge. However, businesses that adapt early to the new search paradigm can gain a competitive edge.
Operational Costs and Scalability: The high operational costs associated with AI-powered search engines could be a barrier. Businesses must weigh the benefits against the costs and consider how to scale their digital marketing efforts effectively.
Integration with ChatGPT: OpenAI plans to integrate the best features of SearchGPT into ChatGPT, potentially expanding its reach and utility. This integration could provide businesses with more comprehensive tools for customer interaction and support.
Local and E-commerce Information: SearchGPT’s ability to provide localized results and handle e-commerce queries can be leveraged by businesses to enhance their local SEO and online sales strategies
SearchGPT represents a significant shift in the search landscape, offering both opportunities and challenges for business and marketing executives. By focusing on high-quality content, adapting to new SEO practices, and leveraging the AI’s advanced capabilities, businesses can position themselves to thrive in this evolving intelligent, digital environment.
“AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it’s crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process, and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic.” – Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic
