1986 Mode - Ritual of the Night - 01

1986 Mode is an Extra Mode featured in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It is a secret and harder variant of Classic Mode, where Miriam's movements are further restricted to provide a greater challenge. This mode was added to the game in Update 1.20.

Overview[]

1986 Mode basically follows the same mechanics and rules of Classic Mode; that is, the game is comprised of five stages, which all are modified versions of the areas from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, but now arranged in a linear manner. The player starts at the beginning of each stage and has to make their way to its end to fight an area boss, all this while dealing with enemies and eluding traps along the way. Miriam has more limited skills than in the main game and ranged attacks are now done via usage of special Abilities she can find by destroying certain candles. These Abilities are fueled by usage of collected Mana Roses. The player is given a determined amount of lives to complete the game, which vary depending on the chosen difficulty level. An extra life can be earned by acquiring the first 30,000 points and then every 50,000 points. Stages are timed, and if the player fails to complete a stage within the given time, they'll lose a life and be taken back to a checkpoint.

While Classic Mode already pays homage to the classic 8-bit games that inspired the Bloodstained series by emulating their gameplay and structure, 1986 Mode takes this a step further by restricting Miriam's movements even more and further replicating the gameplay and rules of those classic games.

To access 1986 Mode, head to the "Extra Modes" menu and select Classic Mode. On the Classic Mode title screen, enter the following cheat code:

↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → X/Square B/Circle

If the code was successfully registered, the number "1986" will appear at the bottom of the screen. Additionally, Miriam will start with a new red outfit while playing in this mode.

Trivia[]

  • The number 1986 is a reference to the original Castlevania, which was released that year on the Famicom Disk System.
  • The code entered to access 1986 Mode is a variant of the Konami Code. Konami were the creators of the Castlevania series, which Koji Igarashi produced for a long time while working for that company, and the Bloodstained series is considered to be a spiritual successor of that franchise.
