There’s a lot to love about autumn – the stunning scenery, cosy nights in, seasonal-inspired hot drinks and, of course, Halloween.
But for a lot of people, autumn (and winter) can be tough, because it means darker mornings and nights – and the lack of sunlight can cause many of us to feel a bit down. With this in mind, here are our tips for looking after your wellbeing during the darker months.
Get as much sunshine in as you can
Sunlight produces vitamin D, which is essential for boosting your mood.
Depending on your schedule, try and get outside while it’s still light out. Whether that’s a lunchtime walk between classes or enjoying a hot drink with friends on an outdoor bench – it all counts. There are lots of great walking routes on campus you can check out.
Make time to do what you enjoy
Whether that’s watching your comfort TV show, cooking your favourite meal, getting lost in a book or trying out a new video game. Have something to look forward to at night and regularly make time to do what you enjoy.
Socialise
Even the most introverted of us need socialisation from time to time. Being social doesn’t necessarily mean going on a wild night out – it can be as simple as attending your classes in person, calling a family member once or twice a week, or having a friend over for a movie night.
If you’re looking to meet new people, you can head along to one of our free Be Connected events or join one of the many student societies on campus.
Look after your body
You know what they say: healthy body, healthy mind.
It’s scientifically proven being active can make us healthier and happier, but you don’t have to force yourself to do types of exercise you don’t enjoy. Take your dog out for a walk (if you don’t have a dog, take yourself out for a walk), check out some of our Just Play sessions, or join one of the Sports Union’s clubs.
Just 30 minutes of activity a day makes all the difference.
Embrace cosy season
Whether that’s organising an afternoon of pumpkin picking with friends, trying out different seasonal soup recipes, layering up your blankets while watching your favourite TV show, or ordering a large oat milk pumpkin spice latte with four pumps maple pecan syrup and a gentle sprinkling of cinnamon on top. Lean into what autumn has to offer and your mindset will change.
Get the support you need
We can all feel a bit low occasionally, but if you feel sad, anxious or have a lack of motivation on a regular basis, it’s important you speak to someone.
Make an appointment with your GP or contact our Student Services Hub, who can put you in touch with one of our counsellors or student advisors.
As a Stirling student, you also have access to a confidential 24/7 support helpline.
Remember, there’s no shame in asking for help.
