We celebrate geospatial relationships every day at Mapbox, but for the week of November 13th, we are making a special effort to celebrate with universities and geo-communities across the country by providing speakers, applied workshops, and opportunities for students to connect with professionals in the geospatial and location industries.

In addition to attending events on college campuses, we’re hosting our own GIS day celebrations at our SF and DC offices. These events are open to everyone and anyone who wants to celebrate GIS Day with us!

November 12: GIS Day celebration at Mapbox SF followed by a Maptime workshop on RoboSat led by Charlie Loyd.

November 19: Post GIS Day celebration at Mapbox DC

Since most can’t attend in person, we wanted to create some GIS Day challenges to let you participate in the fun at home or with your local geo-community.

Challenge 1: Make a new style in studio

Make a new style using Mapbox Studio and tweet with #GISday and #BuiltWithMapbox to share your creation!

How to get started:

Need inspiration? Check out our style gallery to view the beautiful and unique styles that our team has been cooking up.

Challenge 2: Recreate John Snow’s cholera map

Follow this tutorial to transform one of the most famous maps in the world into an interactive web map!

Challenge 3: Make your own map!

Use your own geo-data, or gather data from online sources to build your own web map! Tweet with #GISday and #BuiltWithMapbox to share your creation!

Need data? Jeremy Singer-Vine from Buzzfeed maintains an ongoing list of more than 800 datasets. You can also find public datasets at the links below:

Thank you Mapbox education volunteers!

All of the events that we attend and host wouldn’t be possible without our stellar Mapbox education volunteers. A very special thank you to all of the Mapboxers that donate their time, energy and expertise to helping our education program grow!

Ahmad Aburizaiza, Dana Sulit, Mikel Maron, Vanessa Knoppke-Wetzel, Josh Erb, Brian Davison
Avi Cieplinksi, Charlie Loyd, Brandi Haskins, Sarah Manago, Dan Swick, Raj Kumaradhevan, Megan Danielson
