]]>We can’t wait to revisit the magic of Christmas with all of you during the Vintage Christmas Quilt Along! For the 12 months of 2025, we will dust off our copies of Lori Holt’s Vintage Christmas Book and sew the Vintage Christmas Sampler in her new holiday fabric collection, Home Town Holiday. If you don’t already have this staple in your quilting library, now is the perfect time to pick it up!
With a combination of traditional blocks and novelty blocks drawn by Lori, the Vintage Christmas Sampler will keep the holiday spirit alive all year long. The quilt finishes at 66.5″ x 74.5″ and the Fabric Kit and Backing Set have all the Home Town Holiday fabrics you need to complete your quilt. You can find everything you need on the Vintage Christmas Quit Along Supplies Page and below.
Kimberly will be sharing her progress on social media and you can tune into the Livestream on Friday, November 15th at 9 AM CT (7 AM PT/10 AM ET) on the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube Channel as she prepares for the quilt along and shares her fabric plans for this scrappy quilt. If you want to join Kimberly and other cheery Christmas quilters in the festive fun, make sure you order your Vintage Christmas Fabric Kit soon!
This quilt along uses all 42 of the 6” blocks in Lori Holt’s Vintage Christmas Book and each block is Christmas card perfect. We recommend this quilt along for intermediate quilters and confident beginners. There will be no tutorials throughout the quilt along, but you can always count on Lori’s books to have the best instructions!
The Vintage Christmas Quilt has been recolored with the Home Town Holiday Collection by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs. Kimberly will be sewing along with the Vintage Christmas Fabric Kit, kitted up in Home Town Holiday.

]]>“Begin each day with a grateful heart.” The advice printed on the selvage of Pat Sloan’s latest collection, Gratitude and Grace, is a beautiful reminder befitting the cheerful colors and prints. In celebration of the Gratitude and Grace fabric tour, we have a quilt to share and a special giveaway, too! Read on to find out more.
My name is Kate, and I’m part of the marketing team at Fat Quarter Shop. I’m excited to show you the Sunbeams Quilt that I made with this cute collection by Pat Sloan for Benartex fabrics.
I knew that the Sunbeams Quilt by It’s Sew Emma would show off the fabrics nicely because it has large squares and simple blocks. The pattern is fat quarter-friendly with a scrappy layout, so I placed the fabric randomly, spreading out the prints and colors.
The quilt pattern gives instructions for traditional piecing, but I used Triangles on a Roll Triangle Paper to make the half square triangles. I like how perfectly they always turn out.
The Sunbeams Quilt comes in four sizes, and I made the Lap size that measures 48.5″ x 60.5″.
For the backing fabric, the Midnight Blue Cuddle is soooo soft, and just look at the quilting on the plush fabric. Wow! I know my dogs will agree that Cuddle makes such a cozy quilt. After all, they zero in on the comfiest spots in the house, and if you have pets you probably know what I’m talking about.
I love picking out pantographs to go with my quilts, and on this one, I was inspired by a few of the swirly prints in Gratitude and Grace to choose a quilting design with feathers and large swirls. I sent my quilt to Kustom Kwilts for her “spa day” (a phrase I learned from Pat. Ha!) and was so pleased to see how it turned out.
For the finishing touch, I embroidered my name and year with the alphabet on my sewing machine. I went with a light thread color and attached this extra block to the back of the quilt. I like how it turned out and will definitely use this method for quilt labels again.
Reflecting on gratitude and grace, I love making quilts. I enjoy the whole process, but especially playing with fabric, color, and design. I also enjoy gifting quilts to friends and family. I’m very grateful to work in the quilting field, which is chock-full of lovely people. And lovely quilts, too.
And now for the giveaways! Here’s your chance to win a Gratitude and Grace Layer Cake AND a $50 Fat Quarter Shop Gift Card! A special thanks goes to Benartex for the fabric for this fun giveaway. To enter, leave a comment below to say what you might like to make with this beautiful collection.
UPDATE – Ingrid is the winner, and has been contacted by email! Thank you to everyone for participating! I loved reading the comments.
If you haven’t yet, you’ll want to follow our friend, Pat Sloan, on YouTube for her daily video and check out her blog to see what she’s up to. Don’t forget to hop to the blogs below to see more makes with Gratitude and Grace! Each of them is hosting a giveaway, too. Good luck!

]]>The cooler weather here in Texas has us in the mood to do some hand stitching in front of the TV, bundled up under a cozy quilt, and marathoning our favorite spooky season movies. Today’s Spooky Bat Bunting tutorial is a super quick and easy one! It’s even simple enough to recruit your little ones to join in on the fun!
If you have some Halloween fabric in your stash already, you might just have everything you need for today’s project! Here’s what you’ll need:
Any Halloween fabric will look great for your Bat Bunting, but these are the ones that we picked out:
We decided to use Heat N Bond Ultrahold to attach the fabrics for the sake of speed, longevity, and a lightweight finish. By using Heat N Bond, your fabric is prepped and ready in a flash, the adhesive is perfectly pertinent, and the bats are lightweight enough to be hung by command hooks (ideal for dorm rooms and totally renter-friendly)!
Follow the directions on the back of the Heat N Bond Ultrahold package and allow your fabric to cool before moving on to step three.
Cut out the bats from the Spooky Bat Bunting Template Free PDF and get to tracing! We recommend printing the bats onto cardstock so they’re more sturdy while tracing. We have also been loving the Frixion Fineliner Pen lately because the felt tip draws super smooth on fabric compared to the rollerball version.
Once you’ve traced as many bats as you want onto your fabric, it’s time to cut them out. The Tula Pink Micro Serrated Shears and the Sweet Snips are a favorite at the office, but any sharp fabric scissors will do the trick and cut like a treat!
Step four is where your bats come to life! Start by cutting about two yards of the Aurifil thread, thread it through your needle so it’s doubled, and tie a knot at the end. Insert your needle into the light side of the fabric (it camouflages the knot better) and do a running stitch around the outside of your bat.
It’s up to you how fussy your stitches are! The Heat N Bond Ultrahold is already holding your fabric together, so whether you are a seasoned stitcher or a first-time sewist, your running stitches are there to add charm over security. In fact, we had three of our stitchy staffers, including a true beginner as well as seasoned stitchers, make a sample to show you and we love all three with all of our batty hearts!
It’s time for your bats to take flight! All you need to do is punch a hole at the top of each wing, cut your twine to your preferred length, and string them up. If your twine gets a bit rowdy and unravels, making it hard to thread, wrap a piece of tape around the end and your twine-based mischief will be managed.
Since your little colony of bats is double-sided and a mix of sizes, there are so many patterns you can make! You will see in our examples that we alternated between the dark side of the big bats and the light side of the little bats, but one of our stitchy staffers opted to show just the dark side for an extra spooky sight.
The Spooky Bat Bunting looks great on its own, but sometimes more is more! Layered with a scrappy tassel garland or hung above a scary tablescape, your Spooky Bat Bunting will add a festively frightful finish to your Halloween decor. Be sure to keep an eye on our Instagram! We will be releasing a short and sweet tutorial for this scrappy tassel garland in two flaps of a bat’s wing.

]]>Today we’re kicking off the auction for the Woven Hearts Quilt generously made and donated by Gina Tell (@gina_tell_threadgraffiti), supporting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The Woven Hearts Quilt Auction ends on Monday, October 28, so be sure to follow and bid on the item for a chance to win it! This is a unique chance to own a beautiful, handmade quilt and raise money for a worthy cause. We’re thrilled to auction this beautiful quilt generously donated by our friend Gina Tell! Gina is a talented longarm quilter who shares her love of quilting on her YouTube channel, Thread Graffiti, and she has a passion for giving back. As always, 100% of the proceeds from the auction will go to BCRF.
Gina’s Woven Hearts Quilt measures approximately 68.5″ square and was made with the Dainty Meadow collection by My Sew Quilty Life for Moda Fabrics—the same fabric used in our Woven Hearts Quilt Kit and Backing Set. The all-over quilt design is full of hearts, and Gina stitched a small tag into the binding on the back.
This quilt would make a lovely addition to your home, or a gift to show someone you care.
Go bid on Gina’s Woven Hearts Quilt on eBay and please share!
We are now 3 weeks into our 8-week Quilt Along for the Woven Hearts Quilt and you, our amazing community, have already helped us raise over $6,000 for our fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation! With more than half of the Quilt Along ahead of us and the auction starting today, we are sure to meet (and surpass!) our $10,000 goal in no time.
Since 2021, Fat Quarter Shop is proud to have donated more than $45,000 to breast cancer charities with the support of the generous quilting community. This year, our fundraising goal is $10,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). This amazing charity is responsible for discovering the BRCA genes and they fund scientists who’ve made numerous breakthroughs in the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. For people everywhere, more wins against cancer can’t come fast enough, and we’re proud to join the fight. Will you join us?
To learn more about how you can double your impact during the Woven Hearts Fundraiser and how to join in on the Quilt Along if you haven’t already, check out the announcement blog and the kickoff blog!
As a reminder, this year’s slogan is “No one should face breast cancer alone,” so show the community that they are anything but alone by using the hashtags #FQSWovenHearts and #BCAM2024 on Instagram. Finally, don’t forget to get your annual checkup and remind your friends and family to get theirs too- early detection saves lives!
