William Paul Johnson is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. He joined the court in 2001 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Prior to appointment he was a circuit court judge in the Fifth Judicial District Court of New Mexico.[1]

On June 7, 2024, Johnson announced that he would assume senior status upon the commission of his successor.[2]

Early life and education

A native of Virginia, Johnson graduated from the prestigious Virginia Military Institute with his bachelor's degree in 1981 and also graduated from Washington and Lee University of Virginia with his Juris Doctorate degree in 1985.[1]

Professional career

Johnson spent his entire pre-judicial legal career in private practice in the State of Texas from 1985 to 1986 and in the State of New Mexico from 1986 to 1995 before being elected Circuit Court Judge in the Fifth Judicial District Court of New Mexico from 1995 till his appointment to the federal bench in 2001.[1]

Johnson was nominated by President George W. Bush on September 4, 2001 to a seat vacated by John Conway as Conway went on senior status. Johnson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 13, 2001 on a Senate vote and received commission on December 21, 2001.[1]
