Walter Hodge was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Alaska. He was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 14, 1960. Hodge was confirmed by the Senate on February 18, 1960 and received his commission on February 19, 1960. The seat that Hodge took was a new seat created by 72 Stat. 339, 348. He assumed senior status on August 30, 1966. Hodge's service terminated on July 12, 1975 due to his death.

Judicial career

District of Alaska

Hodge was one of the first three justices appointed to serve on the Alaska Supreme Court when it was established in 1959. He was appointed along with Buell Nesbett and John Dimond on the court's first bench, serving from August 1959 - February 1960.

Hodge believed the new Supreme Court would establish its primary place of business at the state capital in Juneau; this belief led him to move to Juneau. Justice Nesbett, however, was selected as the first Chief Justice, and the two came into conflict over where the court would be situated. Nesbett decided on Anchorage. Hodge responded by resigning, and went on to be appointed to a vacancy in the federal district court. Hodge was succeeded in this position by James von der Heydt.
