Candidate Filing Deadline | Primary Election | General Election |
---|---|---|
Primary: Maine has a closed primary system, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.
Voter registration: There is no deadline for in-person voter registration, but the cut-off for registration by mail is October 16.[2]

Incumbent: The election filled the Class 1 Senate seat, which was held by Olympia Snowe (R). First elected in 1994, Snowe did not seek re-election in 2012 and retired instead.[3] She cited excessive partisanship as a reason why she did not seek re-election.[4]
A minor party candidate, Angus King, was Governor from 1995-2003. An early poll indicated he could win a three-way race for the seat. It was unclear which party he would caucus with if elected, throwing uncertainty on the battle for control of the U.S. Senate.[5]
