Biography

Steve Tataii lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tataii's career experience includes working as an independent conflict resolution consultant, a vocational specialist advisor with Waiawa Correctional, and a language professor.[1][2]

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. Incumbent Mark Takai (D) did not seek re-election in 2016. The seat was vacant following Takai's death from pancreatic cancer on July 20, 2016. Colleen Hanabusa (D) defeated Shirlene Ostrov (R), Alan Yim (L), and Calvin Griffin (I) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Hanabusa defeated six other Democratic candidates in the primary on August 13, 2016.[3][4][5]

2012

Tataii was running in the 2012 election for the U.S. Senate, representing Hawaii. Tataii sought the nomination on the Democratic ticket.[6] Tataii would have run against Michael Gillespie , Antonio Gimbernat, Mazie Hirono, Arturo Reyes, and Ed Case in the Democratic primary. Candidates John Carroll, Charles Collins, John Roco, Linda Lingle, and Eddie Pirkowski ran in the Republican primary. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was June 5, 2012. The primary elections were held on August 11, 2012.

Tataii initially filed to run, but his name failed to appear on the certified candidate list for the primary election.[7]
