|Former Del. S. Saqib Ali from North Potomac served as a leading progressive voice in the House of Delegates from 2007-2011 in District 39. During his tenure, he was the first Muslim to hold elected office in the State of Maryland, 1 of only 7 Muslims in elected office nationwide, and 1 of only 2 South Asians serving in the State House. As a 1st-generation American, he understood the importance of his tenure in Annapolis to his constituents, as he represented a district that was 40% nonwhite at the time and quickly grew to become a multiracial community. During his 2006 campaign he secured endorsements from the Montgomery County Educators’ Association, Washington Post, Sierra Club, and other local progressive organizations. Currently, Saqib is a senior software engineer, a long-time resident of North Potomac, father of 2 daughters attending Montgomery County Public Schools, and graduate of University of Maryland with a BS and MS in computer science.
- When the Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade, we need to make sure women in Maryland can still access abortion services. Also, we need to ensure that women who will come from other states (like West Virginia) will be accommodated. Texas has passed laws that allow bounty hunters to sue doctors. Connecticut has fought back by banning such bounty-hunting against doctors. If I'm elected, I will make sure Maryland does the same as Connecticut.
- I recognize that human-caused global warming is an existential threat to our way of life. That's why I'll support efforts to speed up electrification of our vehicle fleet, adoption of rooftop solar, and switching our coal-fired power plants to renewable energy. Maryland must become carbon neutral by 2045.
- As the wealthiest state in the nation, we ought to offer world-class education. Universal Pre-K is proven to close education gaps. And as our economy demands more high-skilled labor, we can also prepare the next generation with tuition-free community college.
