|I am a lifelong Minnesotan, with 38 years of law enforcement and public service experience. I began my policing career after graduating from the University of Minnesota. In 1986, I joined the Minneapolis Police Department where I rose through the ranks from patrol officer to captain, leading the Criminal Investigations Division and developing strategies to fight and lower crime throughout Minneapolis.
While still working as a Minneapolis Police Officer, I was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1995, where I chaired the Public Safety Policy and Finance Committees. During my 5-terms as a State Representative, I authored key legislative initiatives, including Minnesota’s entry into the nation’s Emergency Management Assistance Compact, provided funding for CODEFOR that computerizes crime-tracking to help our police more quickly solve tough cases, and fought for initiatives that better equip our first responders.
In 2006, I was elected as the 27th Sheriff of Hennepin County, managing 1,100 employees and volunteers, keeping 1.2 million families safe, and presiding over inmates in the largest jail and Sheriff’s Office in the Upper Midwest. As Sheriff, I reprioritized resources that increased criminal information sharing with Police Departments across the region and invested in a Violent Offender Task Force and new Crime Lab technology. Under my leadership, violent crime in Hennepin County dropped nearly 40%.
- Fellow Minnesotans tell me every day that they no longer feel safe going to the grocery store, or they worry about their children playing in their neighborhood, because crime has skyrocketed around the state under the leadership of Governor Walz. That is why my number one priority is public safety. With 38 years of law enforcement experience, as a police officer, Commissioner of Public Safety, and Sheriff, I know what it takes to fight violent crime. While I was Sheriff of Hennepin County, violent crime dropped by nearly 40%. As your Governor, I will stop at nothing to protect Minnesota families and businesses.
- I care about the same issues that Minnesotans around the state care about; the state economy, cutting government spending, and reducing inflation. Our state’s economy is in shambles because of Governor Walz. As Minnesota’s next Governor, I will get government spending under control starting on day one.
- I’m the only candidate running to unseat Governor Walz who has a proven track record of winning as an endorsed Republican in Hennepin County. In 2018, I outperformed other Republican candidates in Hennepin County by nearly 22 points, which means I have the experience and track record to win Minnesota.
I am committed to doing everything in my power as Governor, starting on day one, to increase public safety, reduce government spending, tackle rising inflation, protect the unborn, preserve the 2nd Amendment, expand choice in education, and ensure election integrity.
I began my public safety career in 1984 when I joined the Cottage Grove Police Department, where I was a police officer for two years, before joining the Minneapolis Police Department. I spent 38 years protecting and proudly serving my community, until I retired in 2019 as Sheriff of Hennepin County.
