Peter F. Kilmartin (born February 18, 1962, in Providence, Rhode Island) was the 73rd Attorney General of Rhode Island from 2011 to 2019. A Democrat, he was elected on November 2, 2010.[1]
Kilmartin ran for re-election in 2014. Peter Kilmartin won the general election on November 4, 2014.[2]
He was ineligible to run for re-election in 2018 because of term limits.
Biography
Kilmartin was a member of the Pawtucket Police Department for 24 years. He began as an officer on patrol and retired as a captain. In addition to his service as a police officer, Kilmartin served as member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives.[3]

Political career
Rhode Island Attorney General (2011-2019)
Kilmartin served as attorney general of Rhode Island from 2011 to 2019.
On February 24, 2010, Kilmartin announced his candidacy for the statewide office of attorney general after incumbent Patrick Lynch was barred by state term-limit laws from running for a third consecutive term in office.[4] He won the 2010 election and assumed office in January 2011.[3] Kilmartin was re-elected in 2014. He was ineligible to run for re-election in 2018 because of term limits.
As attorney general, Kilmartin sought the legislature's approval on a number of bills, including legislation to expand the state's gun laws and protect mortgage holders. Investigations overseen by his office included scandals involving 38 Studios and Dan Doyle's Institute for International Sport.[5]
Rhode Island House of Representatives (1990-2011)
Kilmartin served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1990 to 2011, including a stint as House Majority Whip.[3] His accomplishments during his time in office include passing laws to protect children from predators, create a witness protection program, end texting while driving, and force mortgage companies to pay property taxes.[6]

Kilmartin ran for re-election as Rhode Island Attorney General in 2014.[7] He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 9. The general election took place on November 4, 2014.

The office of attorney general was open as Patrick Lynch was term-limited. On November 2, 2010, Peter F. Kilmartin won election to the office of Rhode Island Attorney General. He defeated Erik B. Wallin (R), Christopher H. Little (MOD), Keven A. McKenna (I) and Robert E. Rainville (I) in the general election.
