Candidate Connection

Pam Brush participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Pam Brush's responses follow below.[4]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Economy

2) Education
3) Opioid Crisis[5][6]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Education, I know it is not a traditional Republican issue. As a retired educator I am very aware how government has become big business with unacceptable results. Each year teachers and school personnel beg for a pay raise but do not deal with eliminating waste and redundancy all from a state centralized location.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[6]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Pam Brush answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My parents lead by example. My parents were Democrats. But our Family was known as the Christian with a strong work ethic and concern about the "widows and orphans". The 5 children ended up in fields of service: Pastor , Air Force, WV Social Worker worker, Speech Pathogist and Parks and Recreation.[6]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Organizational Leadership and Service of Local and State Projects I have served as President of WV Speech and Hearing Assn. as well as VP of Prof Dev. and representative on National Advisory Committee. For over 15 years I lobbied for Newborn Hearing Screening, Licensure to protect consumers and recognition for national certification. I also lobbied the state legislature for teacher benefits for 14 years. I also learned the process and legislative leadership during different administrations.[6]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Chain Breaker If you need freedom or Savin' He's a prison shakin' Savior If you got chains He's a chain breaker. We can no longer ignore the nation's highest overdose rate. We need prevention with education and community involvement, qualified rehab facilities and drug court/ day report centers to return to a normal life.[6]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
One of our two state legislators worked very hard to be elected. While serving she has not created drama but worked diligently to submit needed legislation, worked with fellow senators and has been very successful.[6]

2012

Brush's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Reducing our taxes

  • Repealing the State Food Sales Tax
  • Increasing the Homestead Exemption
  • I favor a percentage increase rather than across the board.
  • Reforming prevailing wage rates so they are set at fair market rates

Put Berkeley County Back on the Map

  • Increase the “local share” of our taxes
  • 90% of our property and real estate taxes stay in Charleston
  • I am tired of paying the bills of the whole state.
  • More local control of our taxes

Education Reform

  • Why does it cost more than $15,000 a year to educate our children and still have reading and math proficiency declines and teacher salaries lag behind?
  • Basic reading and math skills should be our first priority.
  • Technology and science instruction should be encouraged but not at the expense of basic skills.

Family Values

  • As a Christian, God’s word is my moral compass
  • Pro Life
  • Favor Marriage, WV Constitutional Amendment
