How vacancies are filled in Ohio
If there is a vacancy in the Ohio General Assembly, the vacancy must be filled by an election conducted by the members of the legislative house where the vacancy happened who are members of the party that last held the seat. A simple majority vote is needed in order to approve a replacement.[1]

A special election for Ohio State Senate District 33 was called for November 5, 2024. The candidate filing deadline was August 12, 2024.[2] The seat became vacant after Michael Rulli (R) won a special election to the Ohio's 6th Congressional District on June 11, 2024. - 27 Republican seats
As of December 1st, 2024, Republicans controlled 55% of all state legislative seats nationally, while Democrats held 44.12%. Republicans held a majority in 56 chambers, and Democrats held the majority in 41 chambers. Two chambers (Alaska House and Alaska Senate) were organized under multipartisan, power-sharing coalitions.
