Twelve seats on the Urban County Council in Lexington, Kentucky, were up for election on November 8, 2016. Since no more than two candidates filed for any given district, there were no primary races. There was only one contested race for the council. Incumbent Shevawn Akers of District 2 was defeated by Sasha Love Higgins. Russell Hensley resigned from the council in September 2016, after which Kathy Plomin was appointed to his seat. Although he announced his withdrawal from the race, Hensley's name still appeared on the ballot.

The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was January 26, 2016.[1]
