Three members of the public service commission are appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Michigan State Senate. Commissioners serve six-year staggered terms. The governor designates the chairman. No more than two members can be of the same political party.[1]

Duties

The duties of the Public Service Commission include:[1]

  • Establishing fair and reasonable rates for regulated services and adopting and administering fair terms and conditions of service for the state's utility customers.
  • Assuring adequate and reliable supplies of regulated services to all Michigan customers, and the safe and efficient production, distribution, and use of the state's energy, telecommunications, and transportation services.
  • Assuring the security of the state's critical infrastructure by promoting homeland security.
  • Promoting the state's economic growth and enhancing the quality of life of its communities through adoption of new technologies like broadband telecommunications and efficient renewable energy resources.
  • Providing customers with the opportunity to choose alternative electric, natural gas, telecommunications, and transportation providers.
  • Providing regulatory oversight in a prudent and efficient manner while implementing legislative and constitutional requirements.
