Michael Rice is the Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction. He assumed office on August 1, 2019. His current term ends on July 31, 2025.

Biography

Prior to his appointment as the superintendent of public instruction, Rice had spent 12 years as the superintendent of Kalamazoo Public Schools. Before that, he was the superintendent of Clifton Public Schools in New Jersey. His professional experience also includes teaching high school French and serving as a cabinet-level administrator in D.C. Public Schools, the Fort Wayne Community Schools, and the Lansing School District.

Rice received both his doctorate and master's degrees in administration from New York University and his bachelor's degree in psychology from Yale University.[1]

Career

Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction (2019 - Present)

On May 7, 2019, Rice was appointed Michigan superintendent of public instruction by the state board of education. He replaced interim superintendent Sheila Alles.
