The 6th Congressional District of Maryland held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 4, 2014. Heading into the election, the incumbent was Rep. John Delaney (D). He defeated challengers Dan Bongino (R) and George Gluck (G) in the general election.[4]

Delaney (D) was first elected in 2012. He defeated the previous incumbent, Roscoe Bartlett (R), by more than 20 percent in 2012.

Delaney ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 24, 2014. Dan Bongino won the Republican nomination after defeating Harold Painter during the June 24, 2014, primary. Also in the race was Green Party candidate George Gluck who previously sought office in Maryland's 8th District. Delaney maintained a little over $300,000 cash on hand for his campaign, as opposed to Bongino who had just shy of over $30,000.[5][6]

Primary: A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Maryland utilizes a closed primary system. Although parties may hold open primaries, parties generally permit only registered party members to vote in their primaries.[7][8]

For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.

Voter registration: To vote in the primary, voters had to register by June 3, 2014. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 14, 2014.[9]

Government shutdown

Nay3.png On September 30, 2013, the House passed a final stopgap spending bill before the shutdown went into effect. The bill included a one-year delay of the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate and would have also stripped the bill of federal subsidies for congressional members and staff. It passed through the House with a vote of 228-201.[14] At 1 a.m. on October 1, 2013, one hour after the shutdown officially began, the House voted to move forward with going to a conference. In short order, Sen. Harry Reid rejected the call to conference.[15] John Delaney voted against the stopgap spending bill that would have delayed the individual mandate.[16]

Yea3.png The shutdown ended on October 16, 2013, when the House took a vote on HR 2775 after it was approved by the Senate. The bill to reopen the government lifted the $16.7 trillion debt limit and funded the government through January 15, 2014. Federal employees also received retroactive pay for the shutdown period. The only concession made by Senate Democrats was to require income verification for Obamacare subsidies.[17] The House passed the legislation shortly after the Senate, by a vote of 285-144, with all 144 votes against the legislation coming from Republican members. John Delaney voted for HR 2775.[18]

Endorsements

Dan Bongino

  • Former Florida Rep. Allen West endorsed Dan Bongino on January 13, 2014.[34]
    • “Look into the eyes of Dan Bongino and you’ll see conviction like that of the early Minutemen at Concord Bridge. His love of country is above reproach,” West said in a statement.[34]
  • Sen. Mike Lee (Utah) (R-UT) endorsed Bongino on March 13, 2014.[35]
    • “Each election cycle produces a few candidates that we can truly get excited about: men and women who have exemplary leadership experience, a steadfast commitment to conservative principles, new, fresh solutions to today's challenges, unimpeachable character, and the willingness to fight the failed status quo...I know Dan will represent the people's interest. He is a strong constitutional conservative who understands and respects the proper role of the federal government. He has experience fighting against the Washington establishment, while fighting for our positive, forward-moving, conservative reform agenda,” said Lee.[35]
