|Representative Mark Meek is a small business owner who served in the United States Air Force, coached high school football, and has spent years as a dedicated volunteer in our community. In 2016, Mark was elected by the people of House District 40 – which includes Oregon City, Gladstone and unincorporated Clackamas County – to represent them in the Oregon House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2020.
Now Mark is running for the State Senate because our community deserves a Senator who will share our values, fight for our communities, and get real results. Mark will serve our community with integrity and make progress on the issues that matter most to Oregon families.
Raised by a single mom, Mark’s struggles growing up shaped him – but they didn’t define him. Through the love and support of his teachers and community, Mark was able to become the first in his family to graduate high school before going on to serve in the military, earn a college degree and eventually start a successful small business.
Mark and his wife Cindy live in Gladstone and have been married for over 35 years. They have two grown sons and are proud grandparents.
- Reducing Homelessness and Lowering the Cost of Living: Mark Meek understands the struggles facing Oregon families. Mark was homeless and hungry for periods as a child - he knows firsthand how soaring prices and homelessness are hurting Oregon families. That’s why he’s fighting to clean up our streets and expand access to shelters and treatment programs, as well as reduce costs for working families by building more affordable housing, capping prescription drug prices, investing in childcare, and opposing tolling of I-205. The issues facing Oregon families are personal to Mark.
- Improving Public Safety: As a former police officer in the U.S. Air Force, Mark has dedicated his career to protecting the safety of our families. In the State Senate, Mark will increase funding for law enforcement so they have the resources they need to fight crime, hold criminals accountable, and keep our streets safe. As a veteran, Mark also knows that weapons of war have no place in our neighborhoods. That’s why he is the only candidate who will fight for common-sense gun safety reforms that will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous and violent criminals.
- Protecting Healthcare and Fighting Against Abortion Bans: Mark is the only candidate in this race who will fight against a ban on abortion, protect access to birth control, and defend a woman’s right to choose. Mark has also protected healthcare access for over 1 million Oregonians and took on the big pharmaceutical companies to cap the price of insulin and other life-saving prescription drugs.
Mark is passionate about helping all Oregonians achieve their full potential. He has been a leader on affordable housing and expanding homeownership to more first-time homebuyers, improving education and creating more opportunities for apprenticeships and career technical education, protecting access to healthcare and making prescription drugs more affordable, and supporting our veterans.

2016
Meek's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
Veterans: As someone who served our country for eight years in the U.S. Air Force, Mark believes those who put their lives on the line for our country should be treated well when they return home. He’ll work to dedicate funding for veterans services and help disabled veterans get jobs. Seniors: As someone who helps care for his elderly mom, Mark will work to provide services that allow more seniors to age in their homes and protect senior citizens from abuse by toughening penalties against elder abuse at long-term care facilities. Wrong Priorities: As a parent, Mark believes too many politicians in Salem have the wrong priorities – laying off teachers and cutting vital services while giving tax breaks to out-of-state corporations. He will work to increase funding for local schools, so that they can hire more teachers, reduce class size and increase graduation rates. Working Families: Growing up, Mark’s family needed government assistance to put food on the table and he will be a strong voice for working families. He’ll champion paid family and medical leave so that workers can afford to care for a new baby or a family member who is seriously ill. And he will work to help hard-working families earn enough income to support their families. Small Businesses: As a small business owner, Mark will work to create more opportunities for Oregonians to start and expand small businesses, so we can increase jobs. He will strengthen career and technical training programs and work to create a better link between community colleges and local businesses.[8] |

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
