|My name is Mamie A. Melvin, but everyone knows me as Dee. That is why my name will appear on the ballot as Mamie "Dee" Melvin. I was born in North Carolina and grew up in South Carolina. I am a retired Air Force Veteran with over 30 years of active duty and reserve duty. I met and married my husband, Kenneth Melvin, at my first duty station. While serving in the Air Force I took full advantage of the GI Bill and graduated with honors from Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.
In 1998 I was assigned to Patrick AFB in Florida and retired while stationed there in 2007. I have lived in The Villages since 2014.
- We must fully fund public education. Florida's public education system should set the gold standard in the country.
- Now, more than ever, states must take proactive action to protect the environment.
- We must insist that every Floridian is treated equally under the law with equal opportunity and justice for all.
During the pandemic, millions of Floridians lost their jobs. The economy will not recover until workers feel safe at work. We must provide for a safe work place for Florida businesses and employees.
The Florida unemployment system failed. Many were unable to access the system; many waited months for benefits. The new legislature must fix the failed system and find revenue to replace the billions of dollars lost.
We must stop taking public dollars from public education and allocating them to private and for profit charter schools. We must fully fund public education
The pandemic highlighted huge disparities in healthcare. Nearly 3 million Floridians had no health care before the pandemic. Many more lost their health care when they lost their jobs. Florida must leave the Federal suit to eliminate the Affordable Care Act. We must expand Medicaid to insure at least 800,000 more Floridians. I will support action to ensure affordable healthcare is available to all Floridians
Climate change is real and science is not a dirty word. Florida is the "Sunshine State". We need to harness that sun and our other natural resources to provide renewable energy. Now is the time to take action to protect our land, air and water and save the environment for future generations. We cannot wait for someone else to take action. I will support legislation to protect our environment.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the person whose example I would like to follow. She has spent her entire adult life fighting for equal rights for all. She continues to do this despite her health.
To ethically and responsibly represent all constituents with transparency.
The first historical event that I remember was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
My first paid job was as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Students at Palmer College in Charleston SC. The college no longer exists.
I also served in the USAF Air Force for 32 years - 15 years on active duty and 17 years in the USAF Reserve.
If I could be any fictional character, I would be a dragon. I love books and movies that feature dragons. I particularly enjoyed the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey,
Until the age of twelve, I lived in abject poverty. Until then there were days when I was not sure where my next meal would come from or where I would lay my head to sleep at night. Often we had no electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. I am extremely lucky that the state of South Carolina required that I attended school. Otherwise, I would have had no education. I never visited a doctor or a dentist. At the age of twelve I was sent to a Methodist Children's Home. This was the first time I ever felt completely secure and safe.
As the population continues to grow, clean water will become a major challenge that will have to be solved. We must protect Florida's aquifer.
Global warming: Global warming impacts all Floridians across the environmental spectrum. We must take global warming seriously and take steps to slow the emissions of greenhouse gasses by mandating the use of renewable energy and ending deforestation by slowing over development.
Until we start paying workers a livable wage based on economic indicators affordable housing will become critical. This will become even more critical if the Legislature does not stop raiding the Sadowski Trust to balance the budget.

No. I'm not looking for a political career. I want to fill a need in my community now.
