Campaign themes

2014

Halverson explained her themes for the 2014 race on her campaign website:

I am running because I have a passionate desire to help every child succeed in school. Not only do I have the desire, I have worked to gain the skills and the leadership experience to be effective at the Board table.

My passion began when my own children's school ran into a crisis. While I was PTA president elect at Bells Mill Elementary School, a child and a teacher were reporting health issues with the portable classrooms. Parents became scared and angry. Getting through the crisis with remarkable results helped me learn that things just don't turn out well if you sit on the sidelines. You have to get involved to make a difference in your child's education. The experience at Bells Mill in 2005/06 propelled me to advocate for better indoor air quality at the county level and one thing led to another. My knowledge base grew from health and safety issues to curriculum and educational issues. A decade later, this path has led and inspired me to run for the Board of Education.

As a Board member, my priorities are:

  • Build an environment of trust between all stakeholders.
  • Focus more on learning and less on test taking, working toward elevating MCPS as an international benchmark in education.
  • Work at the local level and with our state officials to secure funding to keep all capital projects on on track without further delays.
  • Watch Common Core implementation and PARCC testing closely and work to make necessary legislative changes that support teacher and parent concerns.

I value your input and want to hear from you! If you elect me as your newest Board member, I will work tirelessly, always remembering that EVERY CHILD MATTERS.[4]
