Karen K. Peters was the presiding justice on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department. She was appointed to the Appellate Division by Governor Mario Cuomo on February 3, 1994, and was appointed presiding justice by Governor Andrew Cuomo on April 5, 2012.[1][2]
She retired from the bench at the end of 2017.[3]
Education
Judge Peters graduated from George Washington University in 1969 and New York University School of Law in 1972.[1]
Career
After she was admitted to the bar in 1973, Judge Peters began her legal career as a private practice lawyer. She later worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Dutchess County until 1979, when she became legal counsel to the State Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse. In 1983, she became the director of the State Assembly Government Operations Committee. That same year, she was elected to the Ulster County Family Court, where she served for 9 years. She was elected to the Supreme Court of the State of New York in the 3rd Judicial District in 1992. She was re-elected in 2006 and now serves on the Appellate Division. She is also a member of the New York Commission on Judicial Conduct.[1][2]
