J. Miles Hanisee (Republican Party) is a judge of the New Mexico Court of Appeals. He assumed office in 2011. His current term ends on December 31, 2026.
Hanisee (Republican Party) ran for re-election for judge of the New Mexico Court of Appeals. He won in the retention election on November 6, 2018.
He was initially appointed in July 2011 by Governor Susana Martinez to a term that expired post-election in 2012.[1] Hanisee was defeated in the election, but Martinez re-appointed him in December 2012 after the retirement of Celia Castillo from the court. He was elected to the court of appeals in 2014 for the unexpired remainder of Castillo's term.[2][3] Hanisee was elected to a full-term in 2018.
Hanisee is the chief judge of the court.[4]

Hanisee received his J.D. from Pepperdine University.[1]
Career
Hanisee was in private practice for four years immediately preceding his appointment. He spent the majority of his legal career as an assistant U.S. attorney in New Mexico.[1]

Primary: He ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 3, 2014.
General: He defeated Kerry Kiernan in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 50.9 percent of the vote.Following this election, Hanisee became the first Republican elected to the New Mexico Court of Appeals in 12 years, as well as the first publicly financed candidate to win election to the appellate court. In New Mexico, public financing became available to statewide judicial candidates in 2008. Kerry Kiernan's campaign was also publicly financed, making this race the state's first contested appellate court race in which both candidates were publicly financed.[2][5]

Hanisee ran unsuccessfully for election to the court of appeals, receiving 44.49% of the vote.[6] He was defeated by the winner of the Democratic primary, M. Monica Zamora.[7]
